Here’s the beauty
That was in this”beast”.
My daughter’s friend said it looked like a coffin.
I wasn’t sure if wanted to try to save it,
or take it aparat it to and use the parts for other projects.
I pondered it for several days.
It was so structurally sound that I hated to destroy it as a whole piece of furniture,
so I decided I’d see what I could do with it.

The veneer on top was beyond working with,
so I had to strip it all off. That took several days.
Here it is with all the veneer removed and ready for paint.
I picked Valspar Churchill Vanilla Wheat for the color.
Parts of the original hardware were missing, so I selected these knobs.
What were once “scars”
Are now beauty marks
The details are lovely in this piece, aren’t they?
Even though they show their age.
So glad I gave her a second chance.
Don’t hate me when I tell you I paid $12.50 for her.
$9 for the knobs (half off at Hobby Lobby)
Already had the paint.
Total – $21.50
$21.50 + sweat equity = priceless!

You definitely brought out the beauty in this beast.
I have an old buffet from the 60s my mom gave me. I painted it white and purple and use it for craft storage. Mine is nowhere near fancy like this one. I would love to have this in my living room! In fact, I’m going to keep and eye out for something like this now that I know how gorgeous it can turn out!

This is one of the most beautiful redos I have ever seen! But I do love romantic furniture. Lovely curves. I have a piece with bad veneer to tackle someday. I’ve never done it before. Nice to see yours looking so beautiful.
It is hard not to hate you when we now know that you got that for $12.50 AND that it was structurally sound! You made what did look like it was going to a funeral now look like it is going to be the belle of the ball at a party. Great job to give a whole new lease on life to that piece.

She is stunning! I do wonder how you removed the veneer though? I have been working away at a couple of pieces for ages…that stuff does not come off easily and no one seems to have any short cuts to share! Ugh! You obviously worked very hard…and it really paid off!

Gorgeous and such a great deal too!
Amanda – to remove the veneer I put wet bath towels on top and let them sit for several hours, then I pried up the softest areas around the edges and kept repeating the process. Since I was going for a distressed look, I wasn’t concerned about scraping the surface, but if you are, you’ll want to be very careful when scraping/lifting the softened edges. The wood under the veneer was a fairly hard wood, so it didn’t get scratched badly – just enough to add the the look I was going for anyway!

She is gorgeous. I have a very similar one that I redid in much the same manner a few months ago. I thought I got a good deal because I got five chairs, a table and the sideboard for $200. But that comes out to $28 a piece and you beat me at $12.50!!!!! Shocking…I didn’t think a person could find furniture that cheap any more. She turned out very very lovely.

I usually don’t go that high, but I’ve been looking for one of theses to do ever since I started painting this summer. I too plan to paint mine white and can hardly wait to get started. My Mum owns the exact same cabinet! Hers is also painted white, although she bought it that way. And it has different knobs. How interesting to see how it looked before!

And it is just a breathtaking piece, Angie…you’ve taken it from something oppressive and heavily damaged to something light, clean, shapely, and gorgeous! The way you painted it really accents all of the piece’s beautiful curves…she really was a beauty, after all! This is such an inspiration…I’m glad I finally got to see it! 🙂
