Farmhouse Sink

I know that apron front, farmhouse style kitchen sinks are all the rage,
but there are 2 reasons we didn’t get one for our kitchen remodel.
1)  I’m cheap…those aren’t.
2)  I already have a farmhouse sink.
In fact, I have 2 of them.

Both of my sinks are porcelain over cast iron sinks.

One came out of our old farmhouse in Missouri
and is a single sink with one side drainboard.
It’s sitting in our barn right now.

The other came with our new (old) farmhouse in Illinois.

Technically, it wasn’t IN the house when we moved in (that sink was MUCH uglier),
it came out of the outbuilding where the former owners
dressed the deer they hunted.  It’s a double sink with a double drain board,

and it has a little spot for a bar of soap between the two sinks.

It looked pretty nasty when we bought the house and was mounted
on an iron stand (which I liked, but my husband didn’t) so he was pretty
skeptical when I said I wanted to use the sink in the remodel, but in
23 years of marriage, he’s learned the quickest way to shut me
up is to let me have my way.   He’d rather spend 10 hours working
on one of my projects, than 10 minutes listening to me blabber on and on
about why I want it.  Sometimes it pays to be a blabbermouth.
In my defense – I didn’t insist on the iron stand for it.

Actually, there is a 3rd reason I won’t buy one of those sinks.
Although mine has chips and some stains that will never come off –
it has character and it’s a true, old farmhouse sink, and I like that.

I’m not opposed to new things made to look old, but given a choice…
I’ll take authentically old with a few issues, over “faux old” any day.
I’m dying to show you the whole kitchen.
If only I could convince my husband to pull a few all-nighters
to get the remainder of the work finished, but he seems
to think he needs sleep before he goes to work in the morning.
He must be getting old.
It’s a good thing I prefer authentically old.

  1. Well Angie, I love the farmhouse apron sinks but I agree, why buy a new old style one when you can have the real deal???? That’s always the better option in my opinion. I can’t wait to see the whole room. Darn that need for sleep your husband has! LOL!

    Hugs,
    Judy

  2. It is lovely! Can’t wait to see the rest of your kitchen- my hubby has gone on strike- says he needs a break after 15 years of straight renovating!

  3. I can’t wait to see your finished kitchen either. I love make-overs! I do agree with you on the sink issue and love that you’re re-using an oldie. It’s cute as! I love it. Thanks for sharing.

  4. I’m with you on that one. Why buy, when you already have the real deal. And, it was free! My husbandsays I’m cheap, I prefer thrifty/frugal(?) still deciding which one, lol!

  5. You’ve got a wonderful old sink!!! I agree with you that “authentically old” beats “made to look old” hands down. And you don’t have to worry about putting the first ding or chip in it!

  6. I love the sink Angie! I’m authentically aged myself!

  7. I love your farmhouse sinks, I went w/ authentic in our kitchen, too! I used one of your hymns in my dining room sideboard decorations….hope you like it! LOVE your antique graphics! Thank you for hunting them down and sharing with us.
    Blessings, Audrey

  8. Maybe you need to remind him of what all-nighters were when he was young, bet he works like a horse to get the kitchen done for you, paying no attention to age or work in the morning!

  9. Anyone who buys one of those NEW farm house sinks is wishing they had one of yours. I have two of the vintage farmhouse sinks and I love mine. One is in our kitchen, double bowl, double drain board, I wouldn’t trade it for anything. The other is patiently waiting to be put into our new laundry room. Oh and I love what you said about the blabbering, I think most husbands feel that way.

  10. Angie,
That is on my wish list for a someday project. What a beautiful sink!! You are lucky to live in an older home.I live in a newer home and I am trying to make it look old LOL.I would rather have what you have any day! But I am thankful for what I have. You both are putting in lots of hard work.I know the results will be amazing!!!
    xx

  11. Angie, I totally agree with you about old farm sinks with character versus the new stuff. My old home had the most wonderful sink with drainboard and it was actually the detail that made me fall in love with that house. When we moved here I put an ad in the papers for another similar sink to go into our current home. Now that where we live right now is for sale and we have purchased another older home, I have gone out and found another such sink for that kitchen reno. I just love these old beasts of burden. Looking forward to the full reveal. Yes, my own hubby thinks sleep is important too. I don’t see why they just can’t let him work four days a week instead of five as there is so much good stuff to do at home. Such is life!

  12. Authentically old…BWAH HAHAHAHAHA

I love farmhouse sinks too but I, like you, am not going to pay that price.

  13. I dream of one of those sinks! Your’s will be going strong long after the new ones in the landfill! ~ Maureen

  14. The old sinks really are the best. My kitchen has white cabinets and black counters…wouldn’t one look good in mine! I’ll have to start looking!

  15. Hi Angie, I’ve come over from lavender Dreamer and found your post very interesting. I left my old sinks at our last farmhouse when we moved out because my son (who was taking over) really wanted them! I’m glad that he is interested in keeping the character of the house. I’ve joined your followers so that I can see what the rest looks like!Joan

  16. Oh… I’m definitely with you on this one. I’d love to find one of these sinks–chips and all. I wouldn’t mind one bit.
In fact I did find two–back in the early part of Summer–but, funds are tight right now. So…I just couldn’t justify buying one. They were both double sink and drainboard too. Ahhh… Dreamy!
Can’t wait to see your finished kitchen, Pat

  17. I love it! Your sink has character that just can’t be duplicated in the expensive new ones.

  18. I love farmhouse sinks. My house (which I’m trying to sell since we moved here) has one and I so miss it in this house.

  19. Your sink is wonderful! I would so rather have the real thing if given the choice.
