All you salvage lovers out there – this one’s for you! Today, I’m joining forces with 8 other gals, who are masters at turning junk into gems, for a Salvage Style event, and YOU are invited to participate!
Everyone in our team created a special project, using salvaged items, and we want to see your best salvage style projects as well, so you can link them up below!
Here’s the details of the project I created. During a storm last year, water leaked in through the ceiling fan in our living room, which traveled across the ceiling, and caused damage to one wall. It was cheap paneling on the wall, that I covered with antique Bible pages, but it made the seams between the panels split, and made a huge water spot on the Bible pages, so my husband put up new beadboard on that wall. We painted it bright white and it really helps brighten up the room.
That wall is directly behind our couch, and I wanted to hang something that would be a focal point there, so my husband and I teamed up to create a Wood Shadow Box Shelf – with 2 variations, because I change my mind about my home decor a lot!
He cut four pieces of salvaged wood, and screwed them together to form a frame. Most home improvement stores will do for you if you don’t want to cut them yourself – just give them the measurements you need when you buy the wood.
This was very rough-cut wood, so I sanded it just a little, then used some wood stain to deepen the color.
The box was made the same size as an antique frame I have had in my workshop. I painted the frame and put D-ring hangers on the back, so it could hang from the box, without being permanently attached.
I liked the way it looked, but there seemed to be too much blank space above the ironstone pitchers I put inside of it,. If I was displaying taller things, it would have been fine, but there wasn’t enough room to add another shelf, and that blank space was bothering me.
I had an old window, was a perfect fit for the wood shadow box – how lucky was that?! The wood between the glass panes helped add more visual interest. Again, I just added D-ring hangers, so if I decide to put something larger inside the box, I can easily swap out the window for the antique frame. I can also lift up the window to change out the display inside.
Aside from my plate that is hanging crooked, I love how it looks on the wall next to the family photo canvas. I’m thrilled that we found a new use for FOUR different things in this project, and I love how it looks in my living room. See more my repurposed projects here.

My husband just did the same thing to some old crates! Not sure what came in them but they have Brazil stamped on the sides. And he’s a handyman and was taking out some old windows for a lady (he knows now to bring them home) and putting in new replacement windows. Two of the sashes from the old wood windows fit the boxes perfectly! I’m going to hang them in my craft room to store supplies in. I was trying to decide on whether to paint the boxes white to match the window but just couldn’t bring myself to do it! I think I’ll either leave them as they are or sand the white off the windows and just seal it. I love the look of old wood!

I’m loving what you did! But I’m concerned about that leak. I surely hope that was repaired in conjunction with recovering the wall. And I hope when the wall got recovered the old paneling was removed first and the insulation checked to be certain it was not wet……. Surely you aren’t just covering up what needs serious attention.

The window pane is gorgeous, and I love how you’ve styled the shadow box! I recently picked up a chippy old window at my favorite antique store and have been looking for the perfect home for it. I may have to give this a try! Thanks for sharing!
