Very Simple Christmas Decor

After declaring my goal of not exhausting myself this holiday season, and doing very simple Christmas decor in my house as much as possible, I looked around to see what would require only minor tweaking to make it look festive for Christmas, and I spotted the boxwood wreaths that I hung over some of my favorite old platters.

They’ve been there since spring, when I participated in a Design Ingenuity event, and I knew it would be really easy to make them look Christmasy (yes, spell-check – I know that isn’t a word).

I removed the sheer white ribbon that came on the wreaths, and swapped it out for red gingham ribbon.

It’s the same ribbon I used on my Farmhouse Christmas Ornament, and I’ll be using it a lot on other projects for Christmas this year as well.

I just wrapped the ribbon around the wreath, added a bow with hot glue, and taped the ribbon on the back of each platter.  Later on, I can easily swap this ribbon out for a different one.

Now the wreaths have a simple country Christmas look.

When we lived in New Mexico, many years ago, I had an apple theme in my kitchen, which included a lot of red, but I haven’t really used the color much in our Illinois home, until recently.

I did one project with red paint, and suddenly I was in love with red all over again, and have been going nuts with it ever since.  With Christmas coming up, and Valentine’s Day not far behind it, all those red projects I did will see me through several months of holiday decorating.

I I even found the perfect gingham shirt – it’s casual, cute and affordable.  I added it to my wish list – just in case my family wants gift ideas! 🙂

  1. My goal is to simplify Christmas this year and all the others. Too much stuff is too much. I have five totes that I want to dwindle down to one. The red check says “Country Christmas”, or “Christmas at the Farm”. Very simple and lovely with the ironstone.

  2. Love this idea for its simplicity (& cuteness). A splash of red here & there makes Christmas decorating for me. Another of my favorites is the painted tin can planter with gingham.

  3. Lovely… I so love simple, classic decor!

Very cute change-up for Christmas. I had an apple themed kitchen as well, and still do to a certain extent. I love red!

  5. The little red bows really made a difference. Love the red gingham shirt. Christmas will be here before we know it … smart to get a head start on the decorating. Such a busy time, so simple and easy decoration is for me too.

  6. Simplifying resonates with me. I want my family to enjoy the time we have together. That says farmhouse Christmas. And the red gingham bows are a classic.

This is an inspiring post that has got me looking at past Christmas DIY’s, and asking myself “how could I use this in 2015?”.
    Thank you.

  8. What a cute idea. I have a hutch with room on top for my platters. Didn’t even think of using them until your post. Thanks again for the inspiration.
