Kittens Seem to Find Us

Our family seems to be a magnet for kittens without families of their own.

I vowed we were not getting any new animals.

Three of my kids are young adults, and one has only a few years left in high school, so I don’t want to be the one left to take care of all the animals once all my kids fly the coop, but …

You knew there was a “but,” right?

My son was at his friend’s house and they came across a stray kitten while they were taking a walk.  Both of the boys are cat lovers, and they just couldn’t leave it.  His friend couldn’t keep it because they have their house on the market and had a house showing that day.

My daughter’s 15-year-old cat passed away last month, and I think my son knew I would have a soft spot for a new kitten.

I’m such a sucker.

We argued about what to name her.  I voted for Miss Kitty.  (Does anyone remember the red-haired saloon proprietress from the 70’s TV show Gunsmoke?)

The kitten is an orange tabby, so I thought the name was perfect.  But my son and daughter had no idea who Miss Kitty was and shot my name idea down.

They decided on Mary Jane … as in Spider Man’s red-haired girlfriend.

The vote was two against one, so Mary Jane she is. 🙂

Here are some of the other kittens we’ve opened up our home & hearts to in the last few years.

Loki showed up at our house a few years ago.  He’s the sweetest, most easy-going cat we’ve ever had.

This photo was taken about six months after we got him, and he’s substantially larger now.

My daughter fostered four kittens for the Humane Society last year until they gained enough weight to be adopted.

This little fluffy one was my favorite.

She posed perfectly for my drop cloth stenciled pillow photo.

My middle son found this adorable kitty on our gravel road last year while he taking a walk.  My daughter’s friend gave him a new home.

And then there were the abandoned kittens my nieces and I found while taking a walk when I was visiting my mom.

Seriously, I think my family needs to stop going on walks!

  1. I <3 kitties, too. 😉

I have 2 of 4 kittens that my oldest son’s girlfriend rescued off the road when they were about 10 days old. We bottle fed them til they could be weaned. Then my second son has been “temporarily boarding his two with us(it’s now going on month 5). And now I have taken in a pregnant cat that neighbors abandoned when they suddenly moved. The kittens won’t be staying when it is time to be separated from Mama. I also have a rescue mink who was an escapee from a fur farm. Add to that mix a bird dog and 2 koi. You are the only sucker for animals – but boy do they bring laughter to your life!

  3. Love, Love, LOVE this post! 🙂

  4. Thank you for having such a kind heart towards cats, says one animal lover to another. 🙂

  5. Angie you are the kitten whisper for sure. These furry little loves just know where to go when in need. You are an angel to help them out. Soooooo cute.
    Hugs,
    Kris

  6. I’m so sorry that your daughter’s cat died, Angie. I know how heartbreaking it is to loose a furry family member. Your son is a great young man! I’m very happy to hear that he brought Mary Jane home and you adopted her. She’s a lucky girl. I’m for sure a crazy cat lady as well. 🙂

Oh I know your pain – I just rescued a little guy this Saturday…already have two cats, two dogs and 6 chickens…so what’s one more kitten? he can’t be but 4 weeks old and just followed me around the yard on Saturday after following neighbors pushing strollers….he will be neutered just as soon as he is old enough. We have a horrible feral cat issue in our area. SPAY and NEUTER!!!

  8. This just reinforces my thoughts of you as a really good person, though we are strangers. A person’s true character comes through in how they treat animals, children & the elderly – the most vulnerable in our society. I am a sucker for all animals & have 4 rescue cats. So I volunteer at a pet orphanage to help the ones I can’t adopt. Thanks!

    • My daughter volunteers at the Humane Society too, Mary, and she regularly goes in just to snuggle and play with kittens. I’m lucky we don’t have a whole houseful of kittens by now!

We are of the same heart; kitties are the best! Thanks for sharing.

You better watch out.No matter what we say about no more cats we always have at least 20. We get them all neutured but it doesn’t stop. By the way I think you should rename Miss Kitty to Mr Kitty. Orange tabbies only come in the male purr-suasion just like calicos are always girls.

  11. We live on 8 acres in a rural area – we feed some 30 cats (trapped, spayed and neutered). Just a few of them are gentle. Don’t tell me about stray cats finding you. LOL!!!

They are all so pretty, and you have a heart of gold !

  13. We had a ‘Miss Kitty’ for years, she was the queen of the barn cats!

  14. There are definitely worse things for which to be called a “sucker”! I’m part of the same club. Both the cats we currently have were “found” as well. Izzy and Cleo found their way into our home and our hearts!

  15. Story of my farm life. Kittens just appear. One feral kitten spit at me all the time but arrived to eat each day. Longer story but, one day she bit me (no fault of her own) and I went on rabies watch but refused to allow the vet to do that ugly test to her to see if she was rabid. Now the short version. She sleeps with me and follows me around to the point of annoyance. My hubby says that was the most inventive way a cat found into my heart.

I love cats too, but am severely allergic. I have rescued my fair share of kittens, all of which were bottle babies. That just seems to be my lot in life is to find anything that needs to be bottle fed…lol. I rescued a little one in my yard late one October, I live in northern Alberta, she had been abandoned by her mother. She was my best bud. I would take a bottle to bed with me and she would curl up on the inside of my arm, under my chin. Once she started getting around she was a feisty little thing. Now normally when a kitten hits six to eight weeks its time to find them a new home because of my allergies, but not Boo. I never had a reaction to her and I loved her so much. My Mom and Dad decided I moved around to much and kidnapped her, but whenever I would come over she was all over me cause I was her Mommy. Unfortunately, Boo got really, really sick when she was about 4 years old. I took her to the vet and was told that she had a form of feline lupus. My parents and I made the decision that her quality of life would become so limited that now was the time for her to rest. One of the absolutely hardest things I have ever done in my life was to sit there holding her and petting her and talking to her while she went to sleep. I had a wonderful vet who let me sit and just hold her for another half hour. I still think about her every day.
