I never, ever, ever in a million years thought my husband and I would argue about a rusty dustpan.
Let me rephrase that.
I never thought we’d ever argue about which one of us owns a rusty dustpan.
He usually makes smart mouth comments about most of the rusty junk I’ve hauled home, so when I carried a totally rusted old dustpan into the kitchen and plopped it on the table to repurpose into an alternative fall wreath, I never dreamed it would lead to an argument.
The conversation went something like this …
him – “That’s my dustpan.”
me – “What do you mean that’s your dustpan?”
him – “I use it when I’m cleaning the garage.”
me – “That doesn’t make it yours. I bought it.”
him – “I’m the one who found it in the workshop and got it out.”
me – “I don’t care where you got it. It’s mine.
him – “But you weren’t using it and I am.”
me – “Well, I’m going to use it now. You would never buy something like this and I did. You can have the ugly blue plastic dustpan that you probably did buy.”
him – “But that’s the one we use in the house.”
By this time my voice had escalated to that of a two-year-old fighting with a sibling about a toy.
I looked him straight in the eye and said …
“I’ll buy another ugly blue dustpan for the house, but this one is MINE.”
Thankfully, he knows when it’s dangerous to keep arguing, so I won this argument. 🙂
I found a fall leaves pick at the craft store and got a pine cone, a few acorns, and a tiny terra cotta pot to use with it.
I want to be able to use the dustpan again for Christmas, so I drilled two small holes into the pan and wired the leaf pick with some fresh pine branch cuttings onto it.
That way I can remove the leaf pick and replace the pine branch cutting when it dries out.
The little pot and acorns are hot glued to the pine branch, so I’ll just peel the glue off of the back of it to reuse it.
I think I’d better make a trip into the garage to see if he’s walked off with any more of my rusty junk! 🙂

That’s funny, Angie! I’m glad you won the argument. It would have been a shame if that lovely dustpan would ended up used for its pupose in the garage. You turned it into such a beautiful fall decoration.

I’ve had to become extremely firm about my things, especially my tools. They seem to disappear, mainly because I’m organized and he’s not. He’s getting better, but I still remind him!!!
Eileen, I’m ready to lay down the law about tools too. Every time I need a screwdriver or pliers, I have to go searching for them, because they all seem to have legs that walk off to other family member’s work areas!
sometimes men can be so “non visionary”!!!!
oh well, its a nifty original piece of country that will look good anywhere, even in hanging on the door of the garage.

I love that!!!! I’m constantly bringing home beautiful junk I can reporpose, my hubby brings home garbage. ahahaha. My latest find was a box of small wicker baskets at a yard sale. The lady told me 2 for $1. I told her there was 12 in the box so would she give me a deal. She said sure…$10 for the box. I happily paid for it and hauled it away. Later that day, my daughter pointed out that at 2 for $1, that box should have only cost me $6! Moral is…don’t get too excited when bartering. :~)

Yeah, that sounds like a conversation we’d had around here, too. I’d bet it wouldn’t be too difficult to make a faux rusted dustpan using one of those cheapo plastic ones. Some metallic spray paint, rusty color acrylic paints, sand texture paste, sand paper, etc. Might be a fun project to make your own. Over at Graphics Fairy, you’ll find diy rust paste in different colors using ingredients you might already have on hand.
