{4} the Love of Old Wood

Old wood is so rewarding to work with.
It just seems to look wonderful, no matter what you do with it.
Last week I told you how I did a little surgery
on an antique sewing machine table and
was left with 4 gorgeous, old, wooden parts
that originally held the drawers on the table.
Two of the pieces I finished
have chalkboard backgrounds, and various
bits of salvage added to them.
I showed you the first one I made to display some bits and pieces
of antique sewing goods and it has bobbins to use as hooks for lightweight items.
And the last one I created to display old postcards.
They all started out like this.
To make the “Fleurs” piece,
I had a tiny little apothecary bottle that
was just the right size to fit in the opening, so I used some
chalkboard paint on the back piece.
I didn’t take a photo of the mistake I made at this point,
but I misspelled the word, “fleurs”.
I did take some French in high school,
but clearly everything I learned is long gone.
I got out my stencil and corrected the word with chalk.
Here comes mistake #2.
I wanted the word to be permanent, so I
sprayed some sealer over it…
and then watched my word start to disappear under the moisture.
Back to the ole’ drawing board…or chalkboard.
This time I dry-brushed some white paint
over the stencil to write the word.
One of the wooden pieces had holes in the top and bottom.
but the bottom holes weren’t evenly spaced,
so I had to figure out what to do about it.
I really wanted this drawer pull
on it to use as a towel hanger, but you could
still see the holes around it and it seemed a little wide for the wood.
This drawer pull looks great on it, but
I bought that piece to use on my kitchen drawers
and really only wanted to use salvaged pieces
on these projects.
I ended up deciding to use this piece.
I think it was part of muffler clamp originally.
It was part of my massive metal haul I brought
home from the auction last weekend.
You could still see just a little of the holes,
so I added a piece from an old wooden yardstick.
It makes a perfect holder for some antique spectacles.
A small photo or other bit of paper could also go in that slot.
The top of the wood piece had even holes,
so I used some baling twine to make a hanger for it.
This week we discovered we have a
bleeding heart plant at our house.
I’m so glad the previous owner did a lot of planting.
It will be available in the Knick of Time shop,
but I won’t be one little bit disappointed if it doesn’t sell.
Moving on to another wooden piece from the sewing table.
My inspiration for this piece was an advertisement
from an 1889 Harper’s Magazine.
I love the spectacles on it.  They look similar to
 my pair of antique glasses.
I used some scrapbook photo corners to put the ad on the wood.
There were several of these metal pieces
in my stash of metal, and I was going for a somewhat
industrial/steampunk look, so I added it to the top.
I used this fantastic drawer pull to hold chalk.
and added another chalkboard to the back.
Done!
I’ve got a growing collection of antique postcards,
and a limited number of ways to display them,
so I decided to use the last piece of wood
to create a display for them, which could be
changed according to season, or my mood.
The original color of my back piece was
perfect as a background for the postcards,
but someone had doodled on this one,
so I had to figure out a way to disguise it.
I had a pretty little piece of old crocheted lace
that would do the trick.
 These vintage-looking scrapbook corners
are so fabulous.  They have come in very handy
for several projects I’ve worked on lately.
With them, I can just remove one postcard and
replace it with another when I feel like it.
Here I have an antique Joan of Arc postcard displayed.
I can also turn it sideways to display horizontally oriented cards.
You don’t need to have wood from an antique sewing table
to create something unique.  Just keep your eye out
for nice quality “junk” wood that could be used in new ways.
Blessings,
Angie
