When There’s Trouble in the Chicken Coop

A few days ago, I was working in my she – shed, and I heard a loud squawking coming from the chicken coop.

If you aren’t a chicken owner, let me give you a crash course in Chickenese.

Of course, roosters crow, and they’ll do it any time of the day.

From a distance, crowing sounds quaint.  When it’s outside your bedroom window, you start planning a chicken dinner.

We don’t have any roosters, because we don’t plan to hatch eggs.

… and because we have enough men at our house. 🙂

Soft peeping sounds mean the chickens are content.  All is well in their chicken world.

Loud clucking means one of the girls laid an egg and wants the entire neighborhood to know about it.

So when I heard loud squawking from all our girls, I flew out of my chair and ran outside, just in time to see a fox trying to find a way into the coop.

Looking a little like a chicken myself, I started flapping my arms and yellowing, and the fox disappeared into the trees.

Disaster was averted, and within a few minutes, the girls went back to pecking for bugs on the ground.

Inside my house, there’s more trouble though, and I’m seriously embarrassed to show you, but this is what the inside of my bathroom storage closet looks like.

I have everything except the kitchen sink in there, leaving very little room for towels.

The whole closet is due for a makeover, but until that happens, I found a storage solution my chickens would love!

The good folks at Marmalade Mercantile came to my rescue, and sent me these Wall Storage Bins.

They look like chicken nesting bins, and have a metal chalkboard label on each bin.

We buy the large, extra soft toilet paper, and 18 of them can fit into the three bins, but I’m using one of the bins to hold hand towels.
