Learn how to create a beautifully rustic “It Is Well With My Soul” wood sign easily using reusable silkscreen stencils and chalk paint.
Before we get to today’s project, I have a HUGE favor to ask.
My email delivery service lost ALL my subscribers so if you’d like to see all my new projects you’ll need to subscribe below. You’ll be glad you did because I have tons of new ideas!
Thanks SO much!
Now on to the project.
Years ago I made an “It Is Well With My Soul” sign on a canvas seen HERE.
That sign was very tricky and more difficult to make because I used decoupaged Bible pages and vinyl so I had to weed all the letters.
It was so pretty but so time-consuming to make, so I’ve never tried to make another one. It’s hard to make a profit on something that takes hours to make, while still keeping the price reasonable.
Now that I’ve discovered an easier way to make signs that can be reproduced over and over again, I had to make another one!
I also used a completely different font and used wood instead of a canvas, but the hymn lyrics are the same.
I started with a board cut to 11″ x 11″ size from Home Depot and applied wood stain, letting it dry overnight.
Then I created the image of “It is well with my soul” lyrics in Pic Monkey. You can save this image to make your own stencil.

Next, it was time to create a reusable silkscreen stencil with my Ikonart Stencil Maker.
I love the heck out of this stencil maker!

I used chalk paint, but you can also use also use Screen Printing Ink for shirts, pillows, glass, or towels.
That’s the beauty of these silkscreen stencils. They can be used on anything!
Here’s the finished sign. The lettering came out so crisp and clean. You can’t get that with traditional plastic stencils!
I attached a sawtooth hanger on the back and used a clear coat spray to seal and protect the design.
What do you think? Do you love it as much as I do?
It’s available in my Etsy shop HERE.
The same day, I also made an “Amazing Grace” sign using the exact same method and supplies.
Here’s the image for this sign if you’d like to make one for yourself.
