Guest House Renovation…{My Dream Room}

We’re in the middle of several projects right now, including fixing up our 1980’s RV, which probably won’t get done until next year.  Most days, it’s too hot for my husband to work inside it, so I came up with a new project for him – wasn’t that sweet of me?  Fortunately, he didn’t seem to mind my idea much, once I explained my “vision”.

When we moved into our house about a year and a half ago, I was so thrilled to have an outbuilding with two rooms that I could dedicate to my business.  The larger room, I use as my workshop and the smaller room has been my “office”.  The problem is, neither room has air conditioning or heat, and they are pretty rustic, to say the least.  Even so, I was thrilled to have them, and quickly got settled into my office, fixing it up as much as I could.  Here’s how it looked when I was done.  It was still very rustic, but functional and organized.

The months went by, and I attended some auctions…a lot of auctions.
I brought home stuff…a lot of stuff.
My office went from being rustic and functional, to being a downright dump.

Needless to say, once it got to that point, it was difficult getting much work done in there, and winter came on, so it was too cold anyway and I worked in my house instead (where I made new messes).

Once it started warming up, I got my junk back out of the house, and cleared enough space in my workshop (the other side of the building) to do everything in there.  My husband installed a small unit air conditioner – that produces just enough cool air to make it tolerable.   I  couldn’t stand the thought of trying to tackle the disaster in my office, but when I came across some images of beautiful outbuildings on Pinterest, I became inspired to not only make this room functional – I want to make it beautiful.  Suddenly, I could totally envision this room becoming a combination guest room/photo studio….like this one. {visit my Pinterest Inspiration board HERE}
.
I paid my 13 year old son to drag most everything out of the room (with help from his big brother) and that was enough to get the ball rolling.
(Yes…that is a plant growing through the rafters.)

The next day, my husband started cutting out part of the wall so some of my big antique windows can get installed.  Not only will they look awesome, they’ll also allow a lot more natural light in this dark space, but I’ll need to seriously trim back the small tree and vine that takes over that side of the building every summer.
I’ve been excited about every room we’ve remodeled in our house, but I think I’m the most excited about this space, because it’s NOT in the house, so it won’t get messed up.  It will be like my own private, pretty get-away that I can also use for photography.
I know it seems like a long-shot, but it IS going to happen.  Once I get one of these ideas in my head, I obsess about it until it’s done.  I’ve already asked him how soon before I can get in there with my paint brush, so he knows how badly I want this done.  This photo was taken on July 22, and I have a goal of having the project finished by the end of September.  It will just require a little money, a lot of elbow-grease and a smidge of nagging.

  1. I can’t wait to see what you do with this space. I love your style and your projects. I’m sure it will be great!

  2. Oh Angie … I am so excited for you. I know you will make it lovely and still be rustic. Can’t wait to see what you do. We put a small window A/C in our shop this year and that really makes it a pleasure to work in there. We already had a gas(butane)heater but do not have to use it much because the building is well insulated. You will really enjoy your new room.

  5. I love EVERYTHING you do!!! I am sooooo excited for you and this space! We started a craft room for me at the top of the stairs in the attic….same thing, no heat or air conditioning. So I bought a small electric heater…and in the Summer, I just go up there for a short while in the morning. We plan on having it done, maybe before the new year. Such excitement!!!! I have no walls up yet, only insulation. But I set up my craft table and shelves just like I am in business!!! Good luck to you, and I cant wait to see all of your progress!!! Thanks for all that you do!!! Donna Kelly

  16. Your office looks great! I find it fascinating because of the presence of modern appliances. You could truly feel the balance between the modern fixtures and the old home. Good luck on your other home plans. I am very much positive that you’re going to succeed on those too!

  17. When I saw your inspiration for your workplace, I instantly imagined how it would look. It is really time for your workshop and office to get coated. The paint alone can do tremendous changes to it. Good luck!

  18. These developments sound exciting, Angie! Your antique windows will definitely look so great in there. And I agree with you about trimming that tree beside the building regularly. That can cause damage to your window and to your property massively. Well, I hope that things are doing well with this project. Good luck!
