Easy DIY Rustic Wooden Photo Display Clipboard

Rustic Wooden Photo Display Clipboard

An easy DIY photo display project made with wood scraps and a few supplies you probably already have in your house.

Last week I had one of those rare light bulb moments.  They don’t come often, so I ran with it while the light was still on. 🙂

I had just finished the small tabletop sign for my son’s wedding and started gathering up the supplies I’d used to put them away when that light bulb turned on.  I still had a small piece of scrap wood left over and a bunch of wood lath.  I would have a great reason to procrastinate about putting the supplies away (and I always procrastinate about cleaning up), because I realized I already had everything I needed to make another project.

Scrap plywood for the base

Wood lath

Glue gun and glue sticks

Bulldog clip

Two shades of wood stain (I used this color and this color)

Black spray paint

Supplies to make a Rustic Wooden Photo Display Clipboard | www.knickoftime.net

  1. Cut enough of the wood lath pieces to cover the base.  They should be the same width as the base.
  2.  Stain the wood lath strips that will cover the plywood and let dry.
  3. Use hot glue or wood glue to attach the pieces to the base.
  4. Cut more lath for framing pieces and stain them a darker color for contrast.
  5. Attach the darker lath strips as a frame around the lighter pieces.
  6. Spray-paint the bulldog clip black and let dry.
  7. Screw the bulldog clip onto the frame.

I attached the frame pieces staggered to look like a ladder, just for fun, but you can do it however it looks pleasing to you.

Since summer is winding down, I printed one of my Fall Word Art signs (free printable) as a 5×7 to clip on the frame, and glued a few pine cones at the bottom.

My middle son has been living in my guestroom all summer, but he went back to college for his final semester, so I’m getting ready to decorate the room for Autumn. This photo clipboard was an easy project to jump-start my decorating.

I love this! I have access to all kinds of scrap wood and pallets, i work in manufacturing. Unfortunately i work so much i don’t have much time for projects! I have collected a lot of items tho! Last week they were getting rid of a few cabinets, i was able to take 8 drawer fronts and 2 cabinet doors. You have given me so many ideas thank you!

This is so cute! Easy, and I have some wood that might work instead of the lathe, which I don’t have around right now.

    • Thanks Marilee! I always keep a bundle of wood lathe in my stash. It’s so cheap and comes in so handy when you need rustic small pieces of wood. I’d love to see what you come up with!

  4. Hello, Angie. I just wanted to pop in and tell you how much I enjoyed Talk of the Town #86. It was such a wonderful collection that I lost track of time checking them out. Thank you so much. Cheers, Ardith

(I tried to tell you on that post but just could not find the comment section for it.)
