One good thing that has come from having a stroke is it was a wake up call to take better care of myself. I’ve often called myself an “anti-vegetarian” because I rarely ate fruit or veggies and my diet consisted of mostly meat, potatoes and bread and I consume far too much soda.
I’m still working on reducing my soda intake, but one of the things I’m now consistently doing is making a smoothie every day to increase my fruit and vegetable intake.
Before having a stroke I had never been told by any doctor that I have high blood pressure but apparently I do.
In addition to taking medication to lower blood pressure, I was also told to take potassium.
Have you ever taken potassium pills?
GAG! They are horse pills!
So when my son and daughter-in-law gave me a Magic Bullet for Christmas, I knew I could improve my diet by drinking smoothies. I’ve discovered that fruits and vegetables I didn’t like before, I now love if they are in a smoothie.
So today I’m sharing my smoothie that is loaded with potassium which can help reduce the effects of sodium in the body.
The potassium comes from the banana, but even more so from the spinach in it.
Previously, I wouldn’t have touched spinach, but Iseriously don’t even notice when it’s hidden in with the strawberries and blueberries.
Lower Blood Pressure Breakfast Smoothie
- 1/2 c. orange juice
- 1/3 c. vanilla yogurt
- 1 banana
- 1/2 c frozen strawberries
- 1/4 c. blueberries
- small handful of fresh spinach
Vaya con Dios,
This sounds like a great combination of ingredients, Angie! I love using spinach with fruits…pinning! Hope you are doing better every day! xo
Thanks Linda. I’m doing better every day!
Angie, I am so sorry to hear this but am glad you are doing better. I so enjoy your posts. Love the idea of a smoothie to get more fruit and veggies so will be heading to the store after work to pick them all up. I too have high blood pressure and do not eat very healthy…so thank you so very much for sharing!!
This smoothie is an easy way to eat more fruits and veggies, Caroline. I hope you love it as much as I do!
Hi Angie. Two years ago I was diagnosed with high blood pressure and was taking medication for it. Last year my doctor gave me an EKG and it showed my heart beating weirdly. So she sent me to a cardiologist. Long story short, it ended up being a left bundle block and I am taking a med for that. This past January at my cardi appt there really wasn’t a change to my heart beat. Today I am having an MRI of my heart. I’m scared to death of what they might find, but I’m also needing to know what is causing it. I am overweight and am hoping that’s what’s causing this. THAT I can fix. I am trying to be strong and speaking to someone who understands helps. Thank you for listening. 🙂
Cindy, I hope your MRI goes well and you get answers and find out ways to fix it!
Switch over to Morton Lite salt. It’s half potassium and I can’t tell the difference. I take an OTC potassium pill daily and have for years to prevent fluid retention in my legs and am also taking a prescription. Neither of my potassium pills is large. You must be getting a mega dose! Maybe you could take several of a smaller mg.
We switched to the Morton Lite salt too. You may be right about the dose of my pill because it was huge!
I try to eat some of this stuff in a salad but i like your smoothie better. Good to hear from you, have a great day.
Thanks, looks good. Wearing a heart monitor for the next month for possible Afib.
Thank you for the recipe and have a blessed day
My husband has high blood pressure which is much better since he retired. Unfortunately he had a kidney removed because of cancer and his remaining kidney isn’t great. He has to stay away from anything with potassium. He was eating one piece of black licorice every day because it lowers blood pressure but it has too much potassium. I never use salt, stay away from certain vegetables – squash, parsnips, etc., fruit bananas, oranges, etc. and limit anything with tomato sauce to once a week. It’s strange that one person’s body needs potassium and the other person’s body can’t tolerate it. Good luck with everything. It seems you are doing the right things.
I am so sorry to hear about the stroke and wish you a quick recovery and healthier
Times ahead. Sometimes you get so busy with life and taking care of others, we think we are invinceable. Sjogrens and Rheumatoid Arthritis showed up and and I am taking time to learn as much as possible to do things I can do along with meds to make quality of life my
priority along with the wonderful times with family and friends. Spices and Herbs have made my menus so tasty, I can use less salt and better choices. I too am a Proud Country Girl that appreciates lifes wonders! Thanks for all your sharing and take care if yourself.
P.S. Excited about tring this smoothie!
Hi Angie. So glad you’re continuing to improve.
I live in Southern California so I’m required by law to drink smoothies and pretend to be interested in wheat grass juice (blech) and stuff.
If you’re ever looking for a variation on your recipe I make one that is water, banana, spinach, frozen mango, frozen pineapple and mint leaves.
I was very against it at first since the idea of liquefied spinach makes my stomach turn over and mango is about the only fruit I don’t like. But it is truly delicious and the mint makes it super refreshing.
LOL David! I’ll try your smoothie. Just need to get some mint leaves.
