Some people like to get their books signed,
but I’d rather have a book sign.
but I’d rather have a book sign.
Remember my experiment a few days ago, where
I was trying to recreate the look of an antique porch post column?
There was no visible divider along the wall between
our kitchen and our living room and because I wallpapered
the living room in antique Bible pages and the kitchen got
tongue and groove wood added to the walls, there
needed to be some way to separate the look of the two spaces.
We thought about building just a tiny perpendicular wall to solve
the problem, but I wasn’t really crazy about that idea,
so the hunt was on for an antique porch column.
I actually did find one a few months ago when
we were traveling, but my husband wasn’t crazy
about the idea of riding with it between the
seats in our van for the ride home, so I didn’t buy it.
Since then, I’ve not been able to locate another one,
other than the one I showed you still attached to
an old abandoned farmhouse. I’m hoping someday I’ll find out
who owns that house and talk them into selling it to me.
who owns that house and talk them into selling it to me.
Plan B meant I would have to buy a new one and
try to make it look old, but instead of buying a regular porch post,
we bought 2 stair rail wall posts because they would connect flush
with the wall without any gap in the spindle portion behind them. We just
needed to place them together to get the right height.
It’s not exactly like an antique porch column, but it gets
the job done with a similar look.
the job done with a similar look.
Once the column was in place, it seemed like the perfect
spot to hang a clock, but after several days of batting around ideas to make one,
I spied a stack of my antique coverless books and decided to
I spied a stack of my antique coverless books and decided to
use them to create a “sign” for an imaginary book binding business instead.
I thought it would match the character of the walls in the living room well.
I thought it would match the character of the walls in the living room well.
To create it, I screwed 2 books together.
I love the way the pages of this 156 year old book have aged.
Then I created the 2 parts for the sign
using Word and printed them out on the blank pages each
book had inside the covers. I printed 2 of each so
the sign will be double-sided to view from both the kitchen
and the living room. Incidentally, the name for my
imaginary book bindery was actually the name of an
independent book store in Albuquerque (where we used to live).
It closed about 7 years ago, so I adopted their name.
I needed to find some kind of ring to put through
the books to hang it by, but didn’t have any rings
in my junk stash to go through the thick books,
so I used the clips from an old fish stringer instead.
Whatever works and saves me a trip to the store is my motto.
Eventually, I’ll probably create a clock to switch out
occasionally with this sign, but for now, I’m
loving my “old” porch post and my “antique” store sign.

I love it! Just the right touch to divide a space. I can see a two sided clock hanging there which would be easy to create. But I do love your book sign! Nice job!

That renovation meets the definition of the “wow” factor for me. Just so clever with the books, book pages, porch post,… and the Bound To Be Read is a great memory for you that you captured with the hanging books. Love it!

That is amazing! I love that you used a pretty architectural piece as a divider instead! And the fish stringer hooks…genius!
Your book sign is too cute. You are so creative.
Love the fish stringer idea with the books. I have stacks of books for different projects and will add this to the list! Thanks for a great idea! Came over from Overflowing.

Very clever, Angie!
What an imaginative way to deal with the divide of the spaces. I think your solution looks every bit as good as an old porch column would have. Well done!
Angie, you come up with the BEST things! Love it!!
