One of the least decorative, but necessary items in a kitchen
has got to be the trash can. I’ve always hated to see the trash can
at all in the kitchen, but never had a place to hide it. My family seems
to fill it up pretty quickly, so putting a smaller one under the sink
where it could be hidden behind a cabinet door wasn’t an option.
Since we had to completely gut our kitchen down to the studs in
the walls to remodel it, I was determined to create a way to hide
the trash can, yet still have it very accessible, but like every
other aspect of our kitchen remodel, I didn’t have any plan of how I would do it.
When I came across this large wooden bin in an
antique store one day, I knew I’d found my solution.

My husband created the framework to hold it under a counter and
came up with the great idea of making a little “pocket”
inside the back to hold the rolls of trash bags.

Our trash is well-hidden now and I love the chippy wood
and the well-rusted handle on the front.

I even love the old, rusty hinges that attach it to the bottom of the cabinet.

that is a great find! We actually have our under the sink, a little basket…we don’t produce much trash since we recycle, compost and use cloth diapers 😉

Ick! an eye sore STILL! I have my eye on a few things. But still waiting for that perfect something.
I thought I almost had it today on the way back from the P.O. in town…but it was so covered up with bags of trash…100+ degrees outside and I had the grandaughter in the back seat. So… I didn’t stop. It was a big wicker woven type basket…would be perfect!

I should have known you wouldn’t settle for the covered IKEA metal trash can. There you go again repruposing a great old chippy bin to add character to your kitchen. Looks wonderful against the newly painted wood!!

What a great re-purpose. I think it might have been a flour bin… it looks a lot like the one that was in our farmhouse where I grew up. The house was built around 1925, when everything was made from scratch. It might have been lined with metal, probably to help keep bugs out of the flour, but it opened just like that, and held a 50 lb bag of flour. I always thought that was one of the neatest things in the kitchen, along with the hidden behind a door ironing board. (Mom took out the ironing board and took off the top door and put in little shelves.)
Actually that might have been a grain or flour bin. My Grandmother had a Hoosier cabinet and the flour bin looked just like that, including the handle.
Congratulations, Angie. That is indeed the perfect solution to accessible but not unsightly trash disposal.
On my Aunt and Uncle’s farm they had such a bin in the hen house to keep the feed for the chickens in. Oh I wish I could use this idea in my kitchen! I love it.
