Here’s a knock-off project that is useful, cheap and easy to make as well.
And here’s the original that inspired it.
I found it in the April, 2012 Country Living magazine. These Tin Twine Dispensers were sold
by Terrain, but they are no longer available (they must have been popular after being featured in the magazine) and sold for $15 (which included twine). The price really isn’t awful, considering it included twine, but I’d never bother to order something I know I can make for a fraction of the price.
Creating these cool little cans is quite simple…or, it should have been, if I could find the thing I KNOW I have that I needed for this project. A few months ago, I bought these vintage labels from an Etsy seller
before I knew I would be creating these cans.

I just liked the labels and knew I’d find something fun to do with them.
Then, apparently…I hid them, because I’ve search all over my house, office and workshop and still can’t find them!
Thankfully, I was able to find some free printables online that we can use to make our own.

I added the word, “TWINE” in both English and French. Here’s my printable version to use.
(right click, save and print)
It was so simple, I doubt you need instructions, but here they are anyway.
I think the original project used fabric on the can, I used book pages to cover mine, but you could use scrapbook paper, newsprint, etc. I think dictionary pages would look great on one. Glue your paper on the can with regular school glue.
Cut a circle of fabric a little larger than your can so some hangs over the edge of the can. Use pinking shears around the edge. (Pinking shears keep the fabric from fraying away when you don’t have a seam.)
Print the labels, cut out the one you like and glue it on the can. Put another coat of glue over your whole can to seal it.
Once dry, put your twine inside the can, put your fabric on top and secure with a rubber band and you’re done!
I attach cotton twine to cards that are included with all of my shop orders, so I love having a cute dispenser for it.
Blessings,
Angie

Angie this is SO cute and you really made me laugh when you said you can’t find the labels! I am FAMOUS for that! I try telling my husband where I’m putting something in the hopes that HE’LL remember but that doesn’t always work either!
You sound like me. I have tons of fun supplies that I know I will use one day and I have tons of things I know I have somewhere. What a cute idea!
Thank You for the tutorial and the printable twine labels! This project looks easy enough that even I can do it. Wonderful idea!
What a darling project, Angie! A sweet little gift for crafters and gardeners alike! 🙂
