Heavy Metal

Over the weekend I attended an
auction that was full of old farm goods.
If you prefer fine antiques, this
wouldn’t have been your style of auction, but if you love the
“been there, done that, got the rust to show for it” look,
you would have loved it.
I brought home a whole mess of rust and crust.
This was the kind of auction where nothing
gets cleaned up – it’s from the barn to you.  I brought home plenty
of dirt and cobwebs, along with the rust and crust,
but I’d rather pay a lower price and get the grunge off myself.
Here’s some of the metal I brought home in abundance.
Men don’t usually carry their lunches to work anymore,
but my mom packed my dad’s lunch every day and
I love these old lunch boxes that show they were
well-used and then some.
I love this lid from an old orchard bushel basket.
I think it would look really pretty on a wall.
I brought home a stack of bushel baskets.
The one on top in this photo, I wiped down with
some furniture polish – it’s amazing the difference it makes.
It really brings out the luster in the wood.
I also got a stack of rusty, old, galvanized pails.
Perfect for planting some flowers in.
I couldn’t pass up these cute little metal drawers.
I’m assuming they are from a very old refrigerator.
I think this was from an antique stove.
It’s pretty, that’s for sure.
I’m always glad to find old washtubs.
They are perfect for flower pots and to fill with ice for drinks.
And would you look at my pasture!!
We’ve gotten enough rain to make it gorgeous, screamin’ green.
The grass has gotten so long, my son mowed a path
through it so it is easier to walk through.
When the wind blows, it’s like looking at a green ocean wave.
And I needed this pick ax like I need a hole in the head,
but if I ever need a hole in the head,
I have the right tool for the job.
Now for some less staged photos.
Every container I bought came filled with metal…heavy metal.
I grew some muscles lugging it all out to my van.
There are metal parts for every dohicky you can imagine.
If you ever need a dohicky – give me a holler.
I’ll probably have it.  I’ve always had a screw loose,
but I’ve got plenty of those now too.
I need to find some creative use for old nuts & bolts,
because I got at least 100 of them in all sizes and degrees of rust.
Lots of old tools too….and junk.
I can’t wait to get all the parts and dirt
out of this big wooden box.
I was thrilled I won it, but I should
have pawned the 20 pounds of hardware off on
some unsuspecting sucker nice farmer to take home.
But there is plenty of good junk in those containers too.
I just have to dig for it.
This cute little drawer pull was buried in all that stuff.
I know exactly what I’m going to do with it.
I’ll show you soon.
Well, I hope your weekend was
full of good pickins’ too!
See you this evening for Knick of Time Tuesday!

  1. I have a guy, who has stuff that he sells from cleaning out barns and houses. All that heavy, heavy metal is just what he has tons of. I usually either pick through the container to see if there is anything I want and then re-dump the other poundage into another container. You were at an auction, so you couldn’t do that, though I’ve been to some where people leave what they don’t want and we all crowd around and pick, just like chickens. Wouldn’t the farmer be grinning to see us loving his “junk”? I’ve waxed some boxes that really appreciate the time and moisture. Neat finds, we both like the same things.

  2. Be still my heart…all my favorite stuff!!! Lucky you 🙂 Have fun cleaning and creating! Laurel

  3. WOW!!! I can hardly wait to see what you do with that big box thing. And really, do we need any of that stuff any more than we need a hole in our heads? YES! It’s what gets our heart pumping. I like to call it an aerobic workout. :@

  4. This is my kind of sale. And there’s always metal recycling as a last resort.

  5. Wow! What some awesome finds! I Love it all.
Can’t wait to see what you do with some of the finds.
    Enjoy your day!!!

  6. That is some great stuff! My dad had a lunchbox like that also. Love the rusty crusty doohickys!

    • I can’t wait to see what you come up with for the nuts/bolts/other assorted thing-a-majigs, cuz I have tons (almost literally!) of the same kind of thing from farm auctions, and don’t know what to do with it. My husband and son think I’m nuts, so thank goodness for like minded bloggers, lol!

  7. Though not generally my kind of junk, I really can see the charm and beauty in your rusty finds. The metal drawers are the best (even if I usually prefer something silkier for my drawers). Fun post!

  8. What fabulous rusty metal finds!! Thank you so much for hosting each week.

  9. I envy all of your “heavy metal”. I am looking for a planter for my front yard and one of those wash tubs is just the ticket. Now I just have to go out hunting.

  10. My parents used to use bushel baskets like those in their garden. I would love to have some again.

  11. Oh Angie, I would have loved to attend an auction like that! I love all your rusty crusty things!!
