DIY Antique Doily Banner

I got a wonderful package in the mail last week.  My mother-in-law called me and said that she found some old doilies at an estate sale, but she wasn’t sure if I would like them or not, because they were a little discolored.  She said she washed them well, but the discoloration remained.  I exhaled (relieved), laughed, and told her I love discolored old doilies, so I was glad it didn’t wash out.  She likes some antiques, but isn’t a fan of old wood, patina on metal, and discolored linens like I am.

There were 2 sets of matching doilies and one single oval one, and immediately the odd number made me think of keeping them all together, by using them on a banner.   I sewed them onto twill tape, using larger stitches, in case I decide to remove them from the banner later.

I’ve had this mirror for several years, but decided to list it in my shop last week.  When I finished the banner, on a whim, I put it on top of my piano/desk, behind the doilies.  Those old doilies look even prettier against the “ghost” marks the mirror has, so I can’t decide if I’ll be glad if the mirror sells or not, but I’ll enjoy until then.  It isn’t difficult to find old doilies at antique or thrift stores, or buy them on Etsy or Ebay, but of course, you could always tea-dye newer doilies as well, to make them look aged.
