Repurposed Antique Pages in Vintage Gold Frames & More New Year’s Goals

I think New Year’s resolutions have gotten a bad rap.  Yes, I know many, if not most people don’t stick with them, but I don’t see any harm in attempting positive changes in your life.  It’s better than no attempt at all.  Even if you give up after one week, I don’t look at that as a failure.  I see it as a small success to use as a stepping stone to try again – and succeed for two weeks the next attempt, and so on.  I think people call resolutions a failure and never make any progress, because they don’t see the point in trying if you might fail.

Yesterday, I shared my goal to exercise on a regular basis (my 13 year old son torments me until I get up and do it).  I’ll share another of my goals at the bottom of this post.
Totally unrelated to my New Year’s goals, I’m going to talk about vintage gold frames.  I’ve never been a real fan of them at all, but they always have sold well in my shop, so I continue to offer them.  One day, I was going through a bunch of loose antique pages I have and decided to include some of them in my sets of gold frames.  Sometimes I put antique advertising pages in them, sometimes I put book pages in them, and sometimes I include a sprig of dried flowers with the pages.  I have 3 sets currently available in my shop here, which are all shown below, but there are photos of many of the sets I’ve sold as well.

This set of 3 that has antique advertisements in them is available.  I’d love to get my hands on one of the dress forms shown in the ads.

This set of 6 geography-related frames is available.

I found the handwritten page, shown in the small frame, tucked inside the book the Geography page came from.  It’s a list of various countries, and I thought it was charming.

The North America map page is from the late 1800’s, as are the pages in the 2 connecting frames.  The flags of nations page is from a vintage dictionary.

I like the gold frames so much more with the antique pages in them.

My daughter’s cat has made it a mission to jump in on as many of my photo shoots as possible, then he has the nerve to act like I’m bothering him.  On this day, he laid down to take a nap and put his paw over his eyes – I guess so I wouldn’t disturb his slumber.

In addition to exercising regularly, I also want to focus on getting my finances more organized and work toward becoming debt-free.  I am very familiar with Dave Ramsey and love listening to his common sense advice on the radio, but I bought myself his “Financial Peace Revisited” book and am setting up my “debt snowball” that he recommends.  I love the simplicity of his advice.  Yes, he does offer advanced advice for those who are ready for it, but I’m not focusing on investments – right now I just want to pay down debt and build up an emergency fund.  I’m throwing every little bit of spare change or extra earnings toward paying off bills.  Every so often, I’ll share my progress, and if you are doing the “debt snowball” also, I’d love to hear about your progress as well.  If you don’t want to purchase his books, he has plenty of free advice available on his website and on his radio program, as well, but I’m keeping my book in the one room of my house, where I know I have a few minutes each day to do a little reading.  I don’t think I need to say which room that is!

I have a few more goals I’ll be sharing with you next week.  I’ll try not to subject you to an overload of progress updates, but will share occasionally, as doing so is more to keep myself accountable than anything. You are welcome to comment with how you are doing with your own goals that you’ve set also.  I’d love to hear from you, and hopefully doing so will help us stay committed to our goals together.

Blessings,

Angie

  1. I didn’t buy his books but listen to him often. We started paying down our debt in 2006 and even though we didn’t do it in blazing speed I am happy to report that we no longer have any unsecured debt! If we had not done it when we did I truly feel that we would have lost our home when the recession hit. We barely hung onto it as is. I went with a group called Take Charge America and they were great! They are not a loan company but you send them your payment and they divvy out the money to who you owe (on unsecured debt), they negotiated all our credit card rates to 2% or less, our store cards (Target, Sears, Lowes) wouldn’t budge. Within 3 or 4 years we had them all paid off. We refied the house a few years later when the rates hit rock bottom but we’re still paying about the same in payments so the principal amount is dropping 3 times faster then it use to. At the rate we’re going we’ll knock 17 years off the loan! I didn’t follow Dave’s advice to the letter but listening to him made me want to have a debt free life! It really is nice to have so much burden lifted off your shoulders! By 2010 we were seeing extra cash in our accounts and we were able to go to Hawaii for our 10 year anniversary! This year for our 15th we’re thinking maybe Paris! Or maybe Hawaii again!! LOL I really REALLY loved that place!

Good luck! Keep the big picture in mind or do a goal board so you stay motivated! It really is an amazing feeling so far and we’re not quite debt free yet but well on our way!

  2. I LOVE gold frames… They are so vintage! Good luck on your debt reduction. I have done the “envelope system” for years. It is WONDERFUL!! Keep us updated.

  3. I love the gold frames, but I hadn’t really thought about grouping them. I like that even better! As for debt. Ugh, I hear you. I love Dave Ramsey but my biggest problem is I like to shop. I’m still trying to focus on one thing at a time though.

  4. You always find the BEST stuff! I always admire your Etsy goodies on Etsy and Pinterest and by the time I get there: they’re all gone. =( Happy new year!

  5. I’m always oohing and ahhing over your Pinterest posts of your items for sale. LOVE your style!

Oh my goodness! I LOVE the framed hymns, ads, etc. I have a wonderful box of very , very old sheet music, etc. that belonged to my grandfather. In addition, my grandfather was a hymn writer himself in the 1930’s & 1940’s and I have hymnals & copies of his published songs. Have wanted to do something with them forever but couldn’t quite seem to know what. Just didn’t want them thrown out someday. You have inspired me and next week I am going to start a project similar to yours. THANKS!!!!!!!!!!
