Shedding a Little Light – Antique Door Backdrop and Painted Hallway

In Monday’s post, you got a look at our new home, and some of the work I have cut out for me.

I especially want to get rid of all the dark wood on the walls and doors.

This hallway is short and narrow.  It has 3 doorways – one to my room, one to another bedroom directly across from my room, and one that leads to the basement.
It does have ONE thing going for it – the lovely glass doorknobs on the bedroom doors.

But the rainbow light switch on the left side?   Yeah, it’s a goner.

Not only do the dark wood walls make it look dreary, but there is no light in that hallway, (hopefully we’ll add a fixture soon) and it gets very little natural light unless both bedroom doors are open, and then only a little.

Paint to the Rescue!  For years I avoided white paint, because it reminded me of every apartment I’d ever had – always white walls.

But after years of variously-colored walls, I’m embracing it again.
You just really can’t go wrong with white.

So once the hall was painted Antique White, I brought in my antique door that previously was against a wall in our former living room.

Here’s some little glimpses of it, so you can see why I love it.
Or…if you’re like my husband, you can’t understand why in the world I want such a piece of junk *in* the house.  He still put it up for me though, so I think he just likes to give me a hard time.
Now to dress it up a little…

A chippy little farmhouse stool.

A stack of antique German books & some Fall color
All done!
The wood floor looks so much nicer, now that it isn’t competing with the dark wood walls.
Much lighter and brighter looking, and now it’s starting to feel like home!
Blessings,
Angie

  7. You’d never think this was the same space!!! Like you, I’m once again embracing white walls – and I NEVER thought I would. One of the joys of home ownership is being able to paint dark colors, right? But, white just seems right now. My white will probably be a mis-tint mixed with off the shelf Walmart white. I’m playing with it this weekend…

Fabulous, Angie! White paint rescued you from the “drearies”. Of course, it was that wonderful old, chippy door – coupled with the too cool stool and the old books – that added the charm. 😉
