My Valentine’s Punishment

In honor of Valentine’s Day,
I have a little story for you.
Get a Kleenex…it’s a very sad little story.

Last year it seemed tragic,
but this year I can reflect on it without weeping.

You see, it isn’t all that often that I get flowers from my husband.

Being the tightwad, thrifty person that I am, years ago, I made the mistake
of commenting about the over-priced bouquet he bought me, and he decided to never make that mistake again.
I haven’t received a bouquet of flowers since.

But last year, he bought me ONE single stem red rose.
Yes, a dozen would have been lovely, but believe, me I shut my mouth
and was overjoyed that he bought me a flower.

We had both been at our son’s basketball game until late that evening, and
drove separately to the game, so before we left the parking lot to go home,
he came over to my van and handed me one beautiful red rose.
Overjoyed, I gently placed it on the dashboard of my van, planning
to put it in a vase, and place it in my kitchen window when I got home.

What happened next is still a bit of a blur in my mind.
All I remember is braking at a stop light, and in slow motion,
watching that lovely red rose fall to the floor of the van.

Not only did it fall to the floor, it ricocheted off of the
cup holder and the edge of my seat before it hit the floor.

I screamed to my daughter to retrieve my lovely red rose,
so I wouldn’t crash the van trying to get it.

She leaned over, picked it up by the stem…
and

petal fell off of that stem.
Not one single petal remained.

I felt I was being punished for that ONE stupid comment
I made about the price of roses so many years before.

Knowing I would
never,
ever,
ever,
in this lifetime,
get another flower from my husband again if he learned the fate of the flower he bought me,
I did what any flower-starved wife would do at 9:30 at night on Valentine’s Day.

I went to a gas station and bought myself another red rose,

so my husband would never know what I’d done to the flower he gave me.

Every tightwad bone in my body was in agony, but I handed
5 bucks to the cashier and was just relieved they still had
any red roses left at 9:30 at night on Valentine’s Day.

My daughter kept the secret about my poor rose, bless her heart.

If you think this story is sad and pathetic…it gets worse.

This year my husband gave me a new electric blanket as an early Valentines Day gift.

About 3 days after giving it to me, I laid down for an afternoon nap
and allowed our little dog to snuggle up under the blanket with me.

The next night when I went to bed, the electric blanket wouldn’t turn on.
I had no idea why but the next day, my daughter discovered that one of the electric cords was sticking out of my blanket.

It had been chewed on and ruined.
Another Valentine’s gift…destroyed.

I think I’ve been punished enough
for my stupid comment so many years ago, don’t you?

I hope you all have a Happy Valentine’s Day, and you are smart enough
to not comment on the insane price of fresh-cut flowers!

And honey,if you are reading this,
I hope enough time has passed, that you’ll find this story amusing,
even though I never told you.  Please don’t withhold future flowers
from me, thinking I will mistreat them or say something stupid about them.

I promise the only thing I’ll say is,
“They are beautiful, honey – I love them…and you.” 🙂

  1. All I can say is what a good husband. I miss getting flowers from my husband

Now your going to have to replace your electic blanket LOL

    Happy valentines Day

  2. Happy Valentine’s Day Angie! I loved this story and your blog is going to go sky high because of your great heartfelt stories and your photography! You have such a gift for shooting vignettes that you have put together. I just wanted you to know that I did the same thing. I love flowers and garden like a crazy person, but I am so practical that I always tell my hubby that I don’t want flowers…I want something that I can use. This year he bought me a rain barrel! A few years ago he bought me a wheel barrow…both things I asked for. He gets a lot of good laughs at work telling people what he bought me!

  3. What a great story….thanks for sharing how silly (we all are) about money spent on ‘us’! We do learn somethings and do better. I actually hope he reads this…so he can see how much you love him! Happy Valentine’s Day!

  4. I’ve made that comment as well – hmmm, maybe that’s why I haven’t gotten flowers in a long time!! Learning to keep my mouth shut!!

  5. Brilliant Story!

  6. THIS is the best Valentine’s Day post this year! There has got to be an award somewhere for that. I hope all of your local friends read this, and tell your hubby to get you a whole car full of flowers.

  7. What a wonderful story and thanks for sharing.
I’m sending big hugs and hope you get lots of flowers.

  8. Oh thank you for sharing this beautiful story. It is so touching on every level. I hope you have an amazing Valentines Day this year. Cheers SpecialK XoXo

  9. If your hubby reads this (and I hope he does), I think you’ll be getting flowers today!

  10. Sweet Valentine’s message…hope your day is full of love and roses!! xo

  11. Angie,
Eleven years ago my husband gave me a Valentine flower arrangement in a heart shaped vase. Beautiful! It looked sooooooooo real, but when I saw it up close, I realized it was made of artificial flowers. I grumbled (to myself, thank goodness) that he could have bought me real flowers. He died suddenly in September of that year. I bring the flower arrangement out every Valentine’s Day.

    • Thank you so much for reminding me to appreciate all the goodness of the giver’s heart and only speak when it’s going to uplift and inspire. What a blessing you understood that and refrained from making a comment you would regret for the rest of your life. XoXo!

  12. Do they carry electric blankets at gas stations?

    ~Bliss~

  13. Angie this is the cutest story but also tragic!! lol…$5 for one rose! Bless your heart! Well I hope you get a new blanket and more flowers! Hugs, Linda

  14. So cute! That is something that would totally happen to me! Happy V-Day to you!

  15. WOW! I’m sorry I got such a delight out of reading that! SO HILARIOUS! Oh, the lessons we learn. I made a similar comment one year and asked that he give me a rose bush instead. So he did. Then he started getting me chocolates. I think we just learn as we go. It’s important to laugh and see the humor along the way. Glad your dog wasn’t electricuted! *does this comment seem calloused? It’s SO not meant to be!! Enjoy your sweetheart and have a WONDERFUL Valentine’s day!!

  16. Oh girlfriend. Your stats are going to go way up on this post!

When my husband and I were married about 4 years and had just bought a new home, he bought me on credit a beautiful blue saffire necklace. I loved it but I said, we really shouldn’t keep this….we have other bills. My hubby wasn’t happy but took it back to the store. He said, “I will never buy you another one.”

We will be celebrating our 39th anniversary soon. I have diamonds, rubies, tanzanite, blue saffire earrings, bracelet….but NO saffire necklace.

Oh, I learned that lesson real quick. No matter what my hubby gets me, and he is very giving….I LOVE it..it may not be a favorite, maybe I would have like something better….NOPE….I LOVE it!

I so chuckled at your story. I know most of us have our rose stories!!

So, Happy Valentine’s day…..and enjoy whatever “roses” come your way!!

  17. i am sorry to hear your husband has not yet read your blog. i hope he’ll buy you flowers tomorrow. you deserve them.

  18. haven’t gotten flowers from my husband in over 25 years..way back then i found out I was allergic to them..and just about everything else that grows!! he bought me a paper/cardboard cutout of flowers in a vase that I keep on a shelf to this day!!!!
plus..I’m with you..they are tooooooooooooooooo expensive on Valentine’s Day!I’d rather have a pretty sweater, perfume, book of poetry,or one of his wonderful hand drawn cards!!

  19. Oh, yes, I think we’ve all been there! Maybe that’s a bit of advice we can pass on to new brides-to-be. Accept gifts graciously.

    Happy Valentine’s Day!

  20. Such a funny and sad…but more funny story. Hopefully when he saw how appreciative of the one single rose that hmmmm, he bought you, he will buy you them again!
