Happenstance & a Spit Shine

happenstance – a chance happening or event
I brought home some really great things last week, but the one that totally tickled my fancy is the smallest and least impressive one, by most standards.
I’ve been using a towel to erase the chalk from my chalkboard wall, so I planned to drop by the school supply store to buy a chalkboard eraser.  I would have preferred an old one, but just hadn’t come across any.
Just a few blocks from the school supply store are several antique stores, so I decided to make a quick run through them before going to pick up an eraser.   When I found a shoe shine kit that had this fabulous, old wooden shoe buffer – I knew I’d found my chalkboard eraser.   I love it when I stumble upon something I actually need, but didn’t expect to find.
It  appealed to me even more than a traditional eraser, because as a child, it was my job to “spit shine” my dad’s dress shoes – yes, really spit.
I enjoyed the process of applying shoe polish in a circular motion around the shoe, and using the wooden buffer with sheepskin on it to bring that shoe to a shine.  I’m glad I can relive the memories while erasing my chalkboard.  I hung a little tin measuring cup on the wall for my new eraser & some extra chalk.

I also brought home this terrific wooden tote.  This will probably go in my kitchen, once the remodel is done and I can decide where to go with everything.

I love these old, metal alphabet file tabs.  Most of them are going in my Knick of Time shop on Etsy, but I picked out the letters I wanted to make a little banner.

Isn’t this camp toaster sweet?  I’m not keeping it, but I think it looks wonderful with some old photos on it.  It’s available at Knick of Time on Etsy.  It also would make a unique ceiling light cover, I think.  The light from a bulb looks really pretty shining through the slits in the metal.

If I had a good space for this old wooden quilting hoop, I’d be keeping it, but I’ve about maxed out my walls, so it’s going in my shop too.

I listed this old baby gate in my shop, but absolutely love it, so it won’t bother me at all if it doesn’t sell.

The wood and hardware has the perfect aged look.
I actually thought about using it as a gate to keep our dogs out of a hallway when we aren’t home, until I realized our smaller dog could wiggle right through it.

I’ve actually had these wheels for several months, but they were attached to an old golf bag and I finally got around to asking my husband to remove them for me.  I wish I had one whole wall to display old wheels.  I’ve sold a lot of them and each one has been unique.

Another favorite find was these antique math cards.  I did list them in my shop, but kept just a few out for myself.   Judging by the primitive look of them, I’d guess there were handmade.  There are so many old schoolhouse ways to display them, they just make a sweet {addition} to a vintage display.

This is one I’m keeping.

I also got a complete BINGO game.  Again, I kept a few cards for myself and listed the rest in my shop.

I love old farm shears.  I bought these off an elderly man who was working on his booth in an antique shop.  He was very sweet and helped me haul my biggest purchase out to my van.

My biggest purchase was this old wooden bin.  I spotted it the minute I walked in the door and knew it was coming home with me.  I’ve always hated seeing the trash can in my kitchen and with a family of 6, we have a large trash can, so my husband will install this into a cabinet for me so that in tilts open to put trash in.

It’s huge, and chippy and the handle is so rusty perfect.  Love it!

I hope you had a week filled with lots
of wonderful happenstance too!
