This book came home with me from the auction last week. It was published in 1886.

I was flipping through the pages, when I stumbled upon a little note written to “Ella” in 1890. It was a very short little note that read, “For a cold in the chest, a flannel rag, wrung out in boiling water and sprinkled with turpentine, laid on the chest, gives the greatest relief.
Your warm Friends, Edith and Ethel”.

When I got to this page with a pretty illustration titled,
“Spring – Gathering Violets”, it was a sweet surprise to find one small violet pressed between the pages,

I’m sure Ella never dreamed someone would stumble upon her little pressed flower so many years later, but it put a smile on my face to find it. There were also several scraps of fabric and a pretty little scrap of trim,

The pages have aged to such a pretty color and the illustrations throughout the book are wonderful.

I think I’ll press some flowers between the pages of a book, and leave a little note with it. I’d like to think that 100 years from now, someone will be flipping through the pages and stumble upon it and smile.

Those are some cool finds!! I love antiques as well, especially ones with signatures, dates and little messages. Finding those flowers is really neat.
I was captivated by your post. It’s such a grand feeling when you stumble across a little bit of personal history. It’s the closest thing to stepping into the past and being that other person for just a moment in time. I have an old cook book that belonged to my husband’s grandmother. Inside are clippings of recipes cut from the newspaper and poems and songs lyrics that she jotted down on paper. She lived in a log cabin in the prairie of Oklahoma. The recipes in the book are very basic ingredients and stir not beat (before mixers). But what I love most is the little bits and pieces of memories tucked between the pages. Oh how I love old books like that.. and for that very reason… the tidbitand treasures..even the pencil marks, make the book come alive for me. The past owner and lover of the book becomes a real person!

I wonder if those two ladies were twin sisters or old maid sisters living alone in their parents’ house. It’s so fun to find great treasures like those books and wonder about the owners.

Years ago they took such care to write Beautifully and Artfully. It is so much Fun to find any Treasures pressed between the pages of Old Books isn’t it. I have tucked things in mine for years now so that sometime in the far off Future someone may discover something from our era that was a keepsake for me and they might find interesting or precious.
