It Pays to be a Hoarder & a Winner!

Being a hoarder can have its drawbacks,
but there are times when it really pays off.
But first….
Were you the winner of the
$20 Leslie Janson gift certificate?
You were if you had entry #52!!
This week my husband and I celebrated 23 years
of marriage. so I asked him to pick the
winning number.  He picked #52.
Find out who #52 is at the bottom of this post!
(Remember…patience is a virtue!)
I hope you all aren’t sick of seeing these pieces
I’ve been creating from the wood removed from an antique sewing table,
but I have had such a great time working with it.
Now, remember, the part holding the drawers
was broke, which is why I dismantled those sections.
Most of the pieces became chalkboards,
but the personality of each one is different,
based on the salvaged pieces I picked
to add to them.  I did a whole lot of
rooting and digging through my pile
of “junk”, looking for the right items
to add to each wooden piece.
When I dismantled the wood that held the
sewing drawers, I was left with 8 pieces.
I also had the wood from the top of the table
that originally held the sewing machine.
Here’s how it turned out.
The piece started out like this.
That little hinged piece at the bottom was so
that you could access underneath the sewing machine
and was perfect to turn into a little shelf.
See those little round metal pieces in each corner?
They look really old, don’t they?  Well, they aren’t.
Funny story, coming up!
Less than 7 years ago we bought a new set of couches.
About 2 months after I bought them, I hated
them, but I was stuck with them.
That is, until a friend of my daughter’s was
visiting our house and flopped down on one of the couches
and we heard a loud, “CRACK”.  He’s a big guy…he broke the frame.
After my initial shock, I felt like hugging him,
because that meant I was justified in getting
different couches!  So, we sold the remaining couch,
I saved the cushions from the broken one (because I
am a hoarder) and burned the rest of it.
After doing a happy dance around the bonfire,
I noticed all the upholstery tacks
left in the burn pile had gotten wonderful patina
in the fire.  I’ve had them for almost a year,
and I’m so glad I saved them because they were
the perfect size and had just the look needed
fill the holes that were in the wood frame.
See…it pays to be a hoarder!
You never know when you are going
to need a rusty nail, bolt, screw or tack,
so I save them all…just in case.

This was the old sewing machine before I started.
(One set of the drawers and pieces had already
been removed when this photo was taken).

Here are 7 of the other 8 pieces I created.
This was made to look like it belonged in a repair shop.
I added a tiny antique screwdriver, an old advertisement,
a piece of an old ruler and part of a cloth tape measure
for the hanger.  The part holding the old spectacles
is part of an old hinge.  Another hoarded piece.

This one has old watch movements and faces on it.
Yep, it has another hoarded piece holding
the spectacles here too.

This one was made by request for
a customer in Canada, so this was the “in progress”  photo.

This one has a cool hoarded metal piece at the top,
along with a advertisement for spectacles from Sears & Roebuck.

This one has a French flair and has
a little antique apothecary bottle to hold a flower stem.
Oh…did I mention I hoard old metal?
If not, that’s another piece at the bottom of this one.

This one is for a postcard display,.

This is actually the 1st one I made.
I gave it a sewing theme, in honor of the machine and table
and added all antique sewing pieces to it.

Each of the 8 pieces sold within
an hour of listing them.  One of my fabulous
customers (Lora!!), wanted every one she
could get her hands on and bought the largest piece
and 5 of the smaller pieces.

The best part is I still have 1 piece
I kept for myself, plus 3 of the drawers,
plus the beautiful sewing machine,
PLUS the sewing table, which
I’ve given a makeover and it looks fabulous now!

I’ll show you the table later…when my house is clean.

I got my money’s worth on that auction purchase…
and then some!

So…who was #52 that won the giveaway?  It was
