Sew Inspired Salvage

I bought an antique sewing table months and months ago.
The top was badly damaged, and one of the sides that
held 3 wooden drawers was broken, but the machine
was a gorgeous old Domestic and the
cast iron base is beautiful.
I finally decided it was time to work on it,
so I took off the drawers on both sides
and started painting what was left of the
top and found another piece of salvaged wood
to add to the empty space left by removing the machine.
While waiting for the paint to dry enough
to add a second coat, I started looking at
the wood pieces that I had removed
and realized they were really lovely
and would make a great….something.
Once an idea strikes me in the night,
I can’t sleep until I’ve tried it,
so I got sidetracked from working on the sewing
table and this is the “something” I came up with.
On the backside, I used some scrapbook photo corners,
and inserted some card stock paper to use as a background.
I’ve got quite a bit of vintage sewing goods,
so this was a nice way to be able to
make a display out of a few them.
I added some old wooden bobbins to the bottom,
so lightweight things can be hung from it.
On top, a little metal bobbin, and it was done.
The old wood was a perfect compliment
to the vintage sewing items.

  3. might as well make ‘something’ …he he he!
You’re so clever AND funny. I like your little display. I would have never thought of using the little corner sleeves for paper on the back. Great tip.

LOVE<3 that papered wall. I’m so wanting to do it…. now, if I could just get Honey interested in a day long fishing trip… (as she taps her chin, deep in thought…)

love your decorations and your creativity, wish it would spread like a virus… and I could catch some of it!

  4. Oh my goodness! That is so cute! I think I would have been scratching my head for a REALLY long time trying to figure out what to do with it. I would love to have something like this in my sewing/craft room. Now to find an old piece like that 🙂

  5. Angie, this is so cool. Now I gotta check the pieces I just took out of mine to see what I have. I was going to toss it last night, then I thought. I better at least remove the hardware first; now I’m going to re-think the wood piece too – thanx!

  6. This is SO pretty! Love the idea of using the photo corners to attach the paper! Pinning.

  7. That’s so cool! My mom probably has a lot of those old wonderful vintage items in her sewing room. I might have to raid it!

  8. It turned out beautifully. Reminds me of myself, working on a fun project when there are so many other things I should be doing.

  9. I love your sew inspired salvaged piece! Adding all those spools and such just bring it all together. Super job Angie!
