It’s good to be home!
Two of my three older kids celebrated my return by abandoning me for the evening.
Can you imagine? They thought an evening of swing dancing
in a park sounded like more fun than staying home with mom.
Humpppfff….I’ll remember that.
My oldest son had an excuse for being gone –
he had to work, but he didn’t call me the entire
week I was gone, so my Christmas list should be pretty short this year. :0)
If you aren’t sick of hearing about my trip,
today I’d like to show you some treasures I dug
up while visiting my sister.
My sister and I are alike in so many ways and very different in others.
My sister does NOT like to decorate.
That, I cannot understand.
She put up new wooden wall siding in her living room
(which I thought was a great idea – using outdoor house siding for indoor walls)
and had it all freshly painted, but hadn’t hung a single thing in the room.
No, I just can’t understand that.
I can hardly wait for the paint to dry before I start throwing nails in a wall.
Anyway, I told her I’d help her decorate while I was there.
She brought me things she already had for the room,
and I scrounged around for the rest.
Really old homes in New Mexico yield
some really great stuff, just like old farmhouses in the Midwest do.
You just have to be willing to dig for them, and not be afraid of bugs.
Probably my favorite treasure was this
old poster for a “Fiesta Sale” found in the attic of the
abandoned house behind theirs.
It was extremely fragile and had some holes in it,
but I found a wonderfully aged old board
to display a portion of the poster on
and scrounged up some rusty wire to hang it by.
Fiestas are held at various times every year on the Native American pueblo
near their home, so this poster is a nice little bit of local history.
My son also found a 1940’s flyer for
a store in Wyoming that was seeking animal skins to purchase.
I spotted one of those old stovepipe dampers in my BIL’s shed
and my he said, “Oh…I have 3 of them.”
Three of something to me means an instant collection,
so in the house they came. The rusty old rake head
was found in the abandoned house also. It’s makes
a perfect place to hang their keys by the front door now.
The wooden slicer was a gift I sent to my sister at Christmas.
Do you know what this old wooden shelves once was?
If you aren’t from the southwest, you probably won’t know.
It is a mold used to create adobe bricks.
I gathered up some antique amber bottles my sister had and
a rusty piece of metal to create a display inside
the wooden mold/shelf.
Here’s another wooden mold/shelf.
My BIL made both of them 30-some years ago and had them in his shed.
I did a lot of lecturing about what things belong
in sheds and what things don’t throughout the week.
My BIL just chuckled and shook his head a lot throughout the week.
It was the same scenario I’ve experienced with my own husband many times.
My BIL had found these old bottles a long time ago
and kept them in a bucket in his shed.
Ughh…the man was killing me.
I found the old rusty wire piece and metal lid
in the abandoned house and added them to the vignette inside the shelf.
The locker hook was found in the shed also,
and the spring I found on what was left of a destroyed
old chair in the abandoned house.
My BIL had this adorable little pair of rusty scissors…you guessed it…
in a bucket in his shed.
(repeat after me…”Some things belong in sheds – some things do not.”)
Time and rust have welded them into that position.
They are so darn cute!
Now, this treasure, my niece found in the abandoned house awhile back.
My sister had it in her house, but hadn’t hung it yet.
Doesn’t it look pretty it against the backdrop of
an adobe wall behind their home.
I added a piece of rusty wire to it to hang it in the living room.
Another treasure I found in my BIL’s shed
was an branding iron with his father’s initials on it that they used to brand their cattle.
(Some TBIS…Some TDN)
Unfortunately, I forgot to take a picture of it,
but I brought it in the house and told him
where I thought a good place would be to display it.
My visit came to a close too soon, so I couldn’t
get everything hung in her living room, but
we made a good start and once my mom is back home,
I’m sure she’ll help her figure out where to hang the rest.
On the way home, I got off the train while they
were refueling and found a rusty spike from the railroad track
laying in the dirt. I showed it to my son when I got back on, and like
all other human males, he shook his head and said,
“Mom, did you have to pick that up?”
I’d think I raised him wrong if it wasn’t for the fact
that I know so many other males who all seem to respond the same way.
Son…some things should stay in the dirt…some things should not.
Blessings,
Angie

Well Said!! 😉
Love what you’ve done…killin’ me too, that guy!
You have turned a blank wall into a fascinating display of artifacts! Love it all! ~ Maureen
Isn’t it fun to dig through someone elses junk ? I mean treasures
your son sounds like my daughter I find things and bring them home and she said why do you want that trash?
I love seeing other people’s “stuff”! You did good…and let me tell you, the kids, as they get older….will ALWAYS have more important things than seeing mom at home….trust me on this one!!
I love the rake key holder….but my hubby would want to take off the rust and paint it first, lol.

I just can’t even fathom going somewhere where they just had all of those things ‘laying around’!! You did a great job of arranging them all!
