I just had to update you all on the progress on the old plank flooring in our kitchen.
Yes, I know it has nails and nail holes and lots of dings.
Yes, I know there are discolored sections.
Yes, I know it looks primitive.
The more rustic old boards look, the more I love them and I seriously love these rustic, old boards.
We thought about painting the floor, but decided we’d just put clear sealer on it and see how it looked.
It really highlighted the gorgeous aged look they have and I may just snuggle up and sleep on the floor tonight. We didn’t attempt to remove the dark spots or dents.
We like the authentic aging it shows.
Here’s the progression of the floor:
It looked like this when we moved in.
To this (cutting out 4 layers of linoleum and underlayment covering wood planks)
To this (bare wood planks getting sanded)
I realize primitive, old planks may not be beautiful to some people
and they’ll wonder why in the world we aren’t putting new flooring
down, but I {wood}n’t dream of it. The picture doesn’t do it justice.
I love every gouge, dent and nail hole in it.
So, tell me truthfully, do you love such old floors or are
they just a little too old for your taste?
Our kitchen remodel is coming along nicely. Slowly, but nicely.
I’m counting the minutes until it’s done.
All of the cabinets and counters you saw in that photo are gone.
2 new windows have been installed.
My husband salvaged wood to rebuild a new cabinet
for the sink to rest on and around the oven.
The floor is done and about half of the kitchen has new
wood tongue and groove panels on the walls.
I’ve started some decorating and can’t wait until the walls and trim are
finished so I can do the rest. I’ve been working on window treatments this week.
I’ll warn you – they are out of the ordinary, but I love them.
Just a reminder that I have an Antique Sheet Music and
Antique Book Page banner GIVEAWAY going on right now.
It ends on the 14th. Click on the photo to enter.
Blessings,
Angie

I think they’re gorgeous! I’m hoping to do the wood floors in my master bedroom myself and they have lots of gouges and ding that I plan on just embracing as you have. Can’t wait to see your unusual window dressings!

Love this floor! I once lived in an old schoolhouse and when we refinished the wood floor there were all these sets of three screw holes where the desks were attached. I thought they were charming! ~ Maureen

I had to comment on this post… your floors are beautiful!! My mom and dad built a new, Cape cod style home back in 1997, with the colonial/primitive look in mind. One major feature throughout their home is wide plank, pine flooring, which my dad laid by hand. We put rocks down and beat the boards with chains… just had a time of giving the floors “character.” When my dad finished, he had the head builder over to see… he said he thought dad was crazy at first for not putting shiny new floors in, but admitted everything turned out looking amazing. Mom and dad’s home has since been on a few tours, and the floors are the #1 thing talked about 🙂
Im soooo coveting your Gorgeous plank floors!! lol Just so rustic and homey and PERFECT!!!

I really like the idea of your wood floors. I am trying to decide on my own flooring in phoenix. I love the thought of being green, so I was considering getting bamboo hardwood flooring. I was wondering if you think this would be a good idea.
It looks so unique and its uniqueness gives the emphasis of its beauty… Great idea!!!
