Nothing says, “farmhouse” to me quite like
an old stool or step ladder.
After all, what farmer wouldn’t have one
in his barn or workshop and what farm wife
wouldn’t keep one close by her kitchen.
You could sit a spell while peeling potatoes,
pull one up to the table for a child,
or use it to get out-of-reach items in your pantry.
They have such a practical, no-nonsense charm
and whenever I find them, they always
come well-used and show their years of use,
which of course, makes them great for display today.
Here’s a few I’ve had in my shop in the last year.
I have a high shelf above my stove, so I recently brought
this little step stool home so my daughter and I can reach things on the shelf.
this little step stool home so my daughter and I can reach things on the shelf.
It’s been a hard worker, and has a lot of paint splatters, which
I normally don’t mind, but it didn’t look great in my kitchen. I painted it white,
then added some grain sack style stripes on it.
I still need to put some clear coat on it to protect the look,
but it is a step stool, so I’ll expect it to get worn with use.
We also have a newer step ladder I use when I paint walls and my husband uses
in every room he remodels. We couldn’t do without one.
This one is available at Knick of Time on Etsy, HERE.
It has wonderful rusty patina and makes a great display ladder.
Do you have one of these little workhorses in your home?
Do you use it or display it, or both?
Blessings,
Angie

I just bought two wooden ladders and plan on running barn boards from one to another to display stuff in my sales barn. I love what you did with the step stool, looks great.
i have a little step ladder that i am currently revamping to sell!
Oooo!
I have one like the little step stool you painted. Mine is white with black tread…and chippy and rusty. I love your green one! matches my new bread box!
…but with all the re-working I’m doing in the kitchen, maybe a new paint is in order. I like you stool…hmmm… the wheels are spinning.

I just found a beautiful old Cosco yellow step stool at a yard sale. The new owner of an old home said the previous occupants were hoarders, and every room was piled high…and the last of the goods were in the yard. I got my stool for $3.00 and right now I am displaying it.
Also want to tell you, love your blog!
Yes, love old ladders and step stools…and I LOVE the little makeover yours got!! Now you’ve got me thinking 🙂 Thanks, Laurel
What an amazing transformation! I love the picture of the step stool in the road – is the stripe is supposed to be the line in the road? – that’s what it looks like to me – very artsy! I’m your newest follower from “blog stalker’s” blog hop – I would love it if you would follow me back: godsgrowinggarden.com
Thanks

Yes, I have to have step stools…I am a shorty! Some are for show, some are workhorses!
Hmmm…never counted them before but I think I have about 10 around the house…one is strictly utilitarian…the others serve as shelves, book-holders, impromptu coffee tables, height-adding decor and some are always at=the=ready for stepping. Most of them get painted from time to time too.
Great job! I love the “grain sack” inspiration for the paint job….very clever 🙂
Step ladders and stools are marvelous! All the ones you pictured sure have a lot of character. I think your paint job looks adorable!
Blessings,
Susie
LOVE it!! I have an ugly hot pink new plastic step stool, I’d love to find something like yours for my kitchen!

I hope you don’t mind a sincere form of flattery, but you’ve reminded me of some ladders I have hanging around and I’d like to do a post myself soon! Thank you for sharing!
