she gets such great results because she’s really gifted (which she is!),
but I didn’t realize what a difference the choice of paint can
whether clay and mineral paint was really worth the expense.
price for off-the-shelf paint. I look for “oops” cans for $5 whenever
I can find them. Then, Shelly sent me some of CeCe Caldwell’s paint to try,
and I’m an official paint snob now.
It really is a dream to work with and is the most
forgiving paint…even for novices like myself.
While my mom was visiting, she even created a few signs.
I gave her some basic instruction, then left her on her own
to paint, using stencils. She accidentally spaced the letters wrong
and thought she’d ruined it. It was so nice to show her just
how easy it is to take a damp cloth and wipe off the “error”,
add more paint, then carry on. Her sign turned out wonderful!
(Unfortunately, I didn’t think to take a photo.)
I was so impressed with the results, that I invited Shelly
to come share with you today her latest project.
She knows I have an obsession for clocks, so
I’m thrilled she’s sharing this fabulous little Clock Face Table.
Take it away, Shelly!
I thought I shot a before photo, but it seems to have vanished among the thousands of other original photos I have stored on my computer. Basically, it was stained a dark reddish-brown. My first coat was a thin layer of CeCe Caldwell’s Virginia Chestnut. I applied that to the legs and to the perimeter of the top. Sorry these pictures are so dark and gray but it was a super dreary rainy day the day I painted this.
By the time I had finished that, the first part had already dried so I went back over that with Pittsburgh Gray which I watered down quite a bit to create more of a wash.
I messed around with it a bit and realized I wanted it to be a bit darker so I went went over it one more time with another thin, sloppy, watered down coat of Vermont Slate. Yes, much better!
I never just paint… I mean, I can’t seem to leave anything well enough alone. There’s always some mixin’ and finessing that goes on once I get started. I poured a dollop of three different colors onto the top of a… McDonalds lid? Hahaha ~ I just realized what it was :D.
Ok, so I’m a dork. I have a whole pile of things I recycle for painting. I guess whatever works, right?
I think the three colors I used were CeCe Caldwell’s Cottonwood Sienna, Young Kansas Wheat and Vintage White for the three colors on the top. I was going for an old worn look for the clock face so I just started slathering it all on, mixing and blending as I went along.
When I ended up with the look I wanted, I hauled it down to the basement and traced a clock face on it using a projector. I sealed the entire table with CeCe Caldwell’s Clear Wax then came back with three different waxes to antique it.
We dropped it off to our Shizzle Design booth at Not So Shabby Antiques & Fine Furniture, in Holland, Michigan but we barely had the price tag on when a client contacted me who wanted to buy it, so… back into the truck it went. Well, she looked cute there for a minute:)
Thanx Tonya! Enjoy!!!

How cute that table is! I love the 3 color mix that gave it that aged white, tea stained look.

Thanx Angie, You ROCK!!! It’s really the chalk and clay mix that makes our paint stand out from the rest, it’s amazing what a difference it’s made in my painting career. I’m already looking to hire more help just to keep up with the demand!! Have a GREAT weekend!! Shelly
Yay Shelly!! You finally painted a clock face table & it is awesome!!! I knew you could do it. My clock face pieces are always real good sellers. Congrats, Dee from My Painted Stuff.
I know right! I had to put on my big girl panties, but I did it:D Thanx for the inspiration!!
A little birdy told me Shelly once spilled paint and painted with it right from the ground. Not that I would also know anything about doing that……
Shelly, your dad would be proud, I know Brawn is every time one of our daughters asks to join him in his workshop.

Who ME? BAhahahahaha ~ yes, our driveway is speckled in CeCe Colors and the large Traverse City Cherry spot is STILL as vibrant and hard as it was the day I did it. I had NO idea, I wouldn’t be able to wash it off that quickly. I just used the spill as my paint pallet while I busted out the table, then when I went to wash my pallet away (like 30 minutes later, I couldn’t). We’ll see if being buried under four feet of snow this winter will pop some of it back out.
This is awesome. I know how hard it is to get numbers spaced right on a clock table and this is so pretty. I’ve been wanting to try CeCe Caldwell and I’m looking forward to it. Thanks!
I love this little table! I can see why it sold so quickly! I haven’t tried CC Caldwells but I’ve been wanting to. Now I’m even more motivated to try it.
