Big Blue – an Antique Counter

I recently mentioned that I was offered an antique counter from the same man who I got all the antique windows from.  My husband and son went and picked it up last weekend and brought it home.  I truly have no idea yet what I’m going to do with it.  It’s HUGE – over 9 ft. long.
No – I don’t have any place for it inside my house.
Yes – I still asked my husband to bring it inside so I could clean it up and admire it.
I was completely willing to have a 9 ft. long counter take up my entire living room.
No – he wouldn’t do it.
It’s sitting in my driveway.   Men can be so difficult sometimes.
Although I could create some wonderful pieces from it if I took it apart, I really hate to do that.   It’s times like this I wish I had a brick and mortar shop and not just an online one, because I think this would make an amazing cash register counter.

I can totally envision it getting all fixed up and looking something like this, with some incredible typography inside the panels.
Wow - what a cool hotel check-in desk!

It does have some issues (don’t we all).  The boards on top are really warped and the laminate over the boards is peeling off, so it would need to be replaced.  The right side is “finished”, but the left side is open and unfinished, so that side must have been mounted against a wall.  The inside is hollow, so shelves could be added in there, which would provide a ton of storage.

Sorry for the quirky color of these photos, but the sun was starting to set when I shot them, so the sky and snow are giving it all a blueish tone (although the counter is grayish blue).

I think I’ll probably clean it up and list it on Craigslist and hope someone with an amazing shop wants it, but I sure wish I had someplace to use it myself.  If I had a massively-sized kitchen, you can bet it would become my island!   If it doesn’t sell, don’t be surprised to start seeing posts about things created on old blue wood.

Blessings,

  1. O Angie! I’m looking to see where you live and how far it is from me! 🙂 Kidding. (Kinda) My husband would probably have a fit if I dragged something like that home. I do love it though! I could see it being a kitchen island pretty easily. One could probably take off the end that makes it look a little uneven and use that wood to make an actual end in it….

I’m getting close to revealing an antique ice box that I got free from CL awhile back. It sat in the garage for many months before inspiration hit as to what I could do with it. It is now my bathroom vanity and I LOVE it. But when I picked it up, everyone told me to burn it. 😀 It WAS in pretty bad shape. Maybe you could just hang on to this awhile and one day a light bulb will come on and you will know exactly what you want to do with it.

  2. Hi Angie … Well, that is a huge piece of furniture with lots of possibilities. If you can’t restore it, there is lots of good wood to use. Love old hardwood. I bet you will come up with something one of these days. Maybe a work table in your barn for awhile if you can’t sell it on CraigsList. Is there a local consignment or antique store where you could sell it or consign it? You could sell it on your Etsy shop … pick up only. Good luck. I have a wonderful very old oak piece (top of a counter, back-bar or buffet) … beautiful and hand carved. Just can’t make myself get rid of it, but no place for it. You always find the neatest stuff.

  3. What a cool counter Angie! I would have a hard time parting with it.But sometimes you just don’t have the room. That happens to me allot!

  4. ACK! I wish we were closer. We just sold a similar piece when the owner of our shop thought they were going to have to close. There was a medical emergency in the family and she was urged to close to take care of her husband. Now that things have stabilized she is regretting this decision. We sure could use this for a checkout counter! She has decided to keep the shop open, since it’s her baby and her therapy. But we need to fill it back up again with all sorts of magical goodies. I hope you find a good home for this. Would make a good outdoor bar, too !

  5. Oh Angie, I saw a similar counter today in a shop that sells only antique French and Belgium imports. The price tag? ZAR22000, approx $2420, be still my heart! I am screaming ‘ hold onto it Angie’. You are so creative…inspiration will come and you will do something beautiful with it!

  6. If I had a bricks and mortar store of any type or wasn’t living in a rental, I’d be all over owning this. What a beautiful old wood counter, I always love these when they are in antique or mom & pop stores. Enjoy!– even if it does have to live outside for now…

  7. I absolutely LOVE it. My next kitchen will be predominatly salvaged finds like this.
