Painted Canvas – Chalkboard Style

I’ve been going back and forth between painting on glass and wood the last few weeks, and wanted to play around with some other surfaces, so I chose canvas this week.
Remember The Milk and Cream Co. sign I painted on a window a few weeks ago?  It has a good home now, but there’s just something about the simple wording and uncluttered design that I really loved, so here’s the canvas version I just finished.
I cut out a piece of canvas from a leftover remnant, and pulled at the strings on the side to create a tattered fringe.
I painted the canvas white, and once that was dry, I put a layer of black chalkboard paint over it.  For this project, I used a plastic stencil, rather than vinyl adhesive (I’ll be sharing more about that in a later post!) and used a small foam roller to paint the letters.  I had VERY little paint on the roller.  I just rolled back and forth gently several times to get the color as dark as I wanted it, adding more paint to the roller when needed.  This helps prevent bleeding under the stencil.

Since this one was made to look like a chalkboard, it worked well to hang it on a metal hanger that had the hook for a belt to hold a piece of display chalk.  I hope to play around with more canvas designs soon.  I love the how the texture of the fabric looks when it’s distressed.

  15. Love it!!
I used to cut my own stencils, and painted with them for years.
But, I ‘pounced’ using regular stencil brushes.

Needles to say, between that, tole painting for 25 years, and computer stuff, my writs and elbow has had it. So, because of that I had to quit stenciling.

This roller method is great! I do know it will work best on canvas, as it has a bit of give, but at least a new thing to try. (of course after I gave away BOXES of stencils I had cut.) =(
Oh, great tip about the ‘not much paint on roller’. That is best tip you can give anyone about stenciling.
