DIY Chalkboard Lettering – {Guest House Sign}

If you are like me and aren’t a chalkboard artist, then the method I use may help you to do prettier lettering on your chalkboards.  I know a lot of people just print their lettering on paper, chalk the back of the paper and trace it on the sign, then fill in the lines with chalk, but I like this method a little better because the background and letters don’t get as smudged as they can with the other method.

I brought this huge antique window into my workshop from my barn a few months ago, and I’ve been tripping around it ever since.  It finally occurred to me that it would be really smart to just do something with it and get it out of the way, so I picked up some MDF at Lowes and had them cut it to the size I needed (I love that they’ll do that for you for free).
I select fonts and cut the words I want on vinyl with my Silhouette, then just color in the letters with chalk.

Do these hands need a manicure, or what?  Anyway, I use my fingertip to smudge the chalk around.

I love that I can get “fancy” letters on my chalkboards that I could never freehand draw.

  11. When I saw your hands in the photo today, and you said you might need a manicure, I thought of this that I found and pinned on one of my Pinterest boards. I am not a Mormon, but I am a Christian, and found her words to be uplifting and put everything into perspective.
    Marjorie Pay Hinckley – “I don’t want to drive up to the pearly gates in a shiny sports car, wearing beautifully, tailored clothes, my hair expertly coiffed, and with long, perfectly manicured fingernails. I want to drive up in a station wagon that has mud on the wheels from taking kids to scout camp. I want to be there with a smudge of peanut butter on my shirt from making sandwiches for a sick neighbors children. I want to be there with a little dirt under my fingernails from helping to weed someone’s garden. I want to be there with children’s sticky kisses on my cheeks and the tears of a friend on my shoulder. I want the Lord to know I was really here and that I really lived.”

  12. Oh my gosh, Angie…this is brilliant! I can’t stand my writing on the chalkboard. Now I have another use for my silhouette. Love that tool! Thanks for sharing this…I”m pinning:)

    Hugs,
    Deborah
