Guest House Remodel Update

Progress isn’t going as quickly as I’d hoped it would go on our guest house, but my husband continues to plug away at it, so I thought I’d show you some of the work he’s finished.
The only window this room originally had was the one in the door, so it was very dark.  I still have a huge stock of antique windows, so I picked two matching ones and he framed up the opening and installed them.

The room didn’t have any insulation, so he’s also added insulation in the ceiling and the walls.  Unfortunately, that meant the the rustic ceiling and crossbeams that I really liked needed to be covered up.
I still wanted it to look like boards, but didn’t want to spend a fortune, so we bought plywood and he cut it into strips.  He caulked between each strip and I’ll be painting them.   We were able to leave the cross beams, but the beams that previously went up the ceiling got covered.  The good news is, we had some old beams out in our barn, so he added some of them.  They are old and weathered, so they look very similar to the ones hidden under the ceiling.
He also  sealed up the top of the wall by the ceiling, so vines on the outside can no longer grow up the wall in in through the rafters.

If you recall, this room will be uses as a combination guest room and photo studio, so I wanted the two remaining walls to be different, so I have a few different backgrounds.  For the back wall, I wanted corrugated metal roofing, but I didn’t want shiny new stuff.  I sent out an email to our homeschool group, asking if anyone had some they wanted to sell and got responses from 3 different families!  It never hurts to ask!  We living in a farming community, so lots of people have old sheds and barns and they salvage stuff from them when they tear then down or re-roof them.  We brought home five 14 ft. sheets, which way more than I needed, but I knew I’d find a use for the rest at some point and it only cost $20 for all of them!

My husband still has two more walls to finish before I can get in and start painting and decorating.    I’ve been stockpiling furniture and decor for this room and can’t wait to get it in there.  I’m hoping the next time I give you an update, it’s to tell you the room is done!

If you missed the disaster zone the room looked like before we started this project, you can see it HERE.

Blessings,

Angie
