Wishing I Had a Brick and Mortar Shop

There are days I really wish I had my own brick and mortar shop and not just an online shop
– not so much because I want to run it and be bound to a shop’s hours, but because I want to decorate it and “set up shop”.
I brought home this big, beastly beauty from my pastor’s yard sale last week.  I think it would be perfect sitting on top of my antique shop counter (that is still sitting in my garage!).  Sadly, it’s going to be banished to my dungeon of a workshop.  Weighing heavy packages has always been a nuisance, because I have to weigh myself (not fun), then weigh myself with the package to find out how much it weighs to determine the shipping costs.  I’ve been wanting a large scale for a long time and was thrilled to get this one to help with that task, but I’d be perfectly content to just leave it sitting in the middle of my kitchen table to look at.  I suppose I could use it to hold hot dishes so it would have a function, right?

I just feel badly that it’s going to get dust-covered and likely paint-splattered soon.  I really didn’t need more antique books, but I’ve had a hard time passing them up and that stack is all books I’ve gotten this week.  Last week, I showed you some ugly antique books I painted, but that won’t happen with any of these.  I love their worn and tattered spines and grouping them together makes such a pretty display.  I generally sell them in sets of 4 or 5, so eventually I’ll photograph them and list them, but for now I’m enjoying them.

Here’s the next reason I wish I had a shop of my own.

I bought two old school chairs.  They aren’t the easiest thing to sell online because of the size, but I still couldn’t pass them up.  The combination of old wood and the painted frames got me.

They would be perfect in a big shop display window.

I love the aqua frame on this one.  It’s perfect for fall because it looks so pretty paired with autumn colors.

I also couldn’t pass up this rustic wooden gate.  The combination of weathered wood and big, old hinges are to blame.  It’s heavy and I have no idea where I’ll use it yet.  I’ll probably list it in my shop and if it doesn’t sell, I’m sure I’ll come up with somewhere to use it.  It will make a great display piece or backdrop.

What I’d really love is having a shop that is only open 1 weekend a month, so it’s more like a special event sale, then I’d reset the whole display each month.  Setting up displays things is probably what I love to do the most, so that would totally be my cup of tea.  Maybe someday…maybe.  Until then, my virtual shop will have to do and I’ll just have to enjoy photographing my goods as my display “window”.

Here’s something I think you’ll love!

  1. I have had booths at different antique malls since 1998. I love the buying, painting, and creating displays, but with the booth rental comes the freedom to not wait on customers! I get to do just the fun stuff. Love all your finds, but the school chairs are my favorites because the colors are rare. usually they are gray or tan.

  2. What great finds! I adore old school chairs. I with I had a kitchen with high ceilings and could line up all different children’s chairs along the tops of the cupboards or something!

  3. I could have written this post myself! I feel your pain……I sometimes find the most awesome things but know that they’ll be a PITA to ship so I don’t buy them….but sometimes I do!
I too have a couple of school chairs in my shop. Don’t know if they’ll ever sell but don’t look forward to having to ship them.
Actually I’m thinking of gifting them to my SIL who just had a new baby boy. She already has a 4yo and these cute chairs are both painted blue. They would be the perfect gift for her.
Love your scale……they are such a statement piece, aren’t they?

  4. Beautiful scale, Angie! Having a shop was always a dream of mine, too…and we did monthly sales for 4 years, you go through a LOT of merchandise that way. But I’m going to have to stick with the online stuff now…maybe Craigslist for the bigger stuff?

  5. I know that feeling exactly Angie! I too would love to set up a shop and decorate it but not so much to run one lol it’s because of my passion to collect and to hoard things that I love in my little cottage lol That scale would indeed be perfect for a real shop!

  6. Waiting on customers is actually my least favorite part of having my own shop. If you can swing a place being open one day a month, I would go for it. That’s how I started out and loved it…wish I hadn’t torn down the garage that held my shop then. Ugh!!

  7. I love that scale and the wooden gate! You find the most amazing things!

  8. OMGOODNESS visions of love you have there. LOVE it all. YOU do have a knack for awesome . .. The RUSTY pearl is a fan for sure. Have a blessed OCT and hope that your so blessed you need two trucks to carry it all .

  9. Angie, we have a set of stores here that are only open one day a month… “First Friday”…. what a great idea… that way you could rearrange your front window and entice everyone each month!

  10. Oh my gosh Angie, everything is fabulous! I love, love the scale! How could you not buy it all? The color of the chairs are super fun. As a person who once had a shop, it really does tie you down. I’m like you and would love one that opened just once a month. Someday when I get my little building out back I may do just that. I think you would do great. Just takes word of mouth and now days, that’s pretty darn easy!
    hugs,

  11. Love your finds Angie.Well if you can’t have a shop…how about a sale at your house.I know allot of people are doing those these days.If you have the room …I don’t know what your property is like…if it is a farm or not.But you could have a wonderful sale at your home. The internet is a great way to spread the word!BTW I would not be able to pass up that scale either…it’s amazing!

  12. I Love that Scale!! Angie, I have both my own B&M and space in a Antique Mall. My vote is for the space in the Antique Mall. It’s a much easier life. If you ever have any questions regarding doing either just shoot me a email I would be more than willing to answer any concerns or Questions you have. Also I have friends that set up shop in their own homes monthly, quarterly etc. and sell like crazy. It just takes a little advertising, word of mouth, etc.

    Huggs, Nancy
