On the Workbench and In the Shop

Last Sunday afternoon, my husband took my to an auction.  Believe it or not, I really didn’t feel like going.  I just wanted to relax and work on some projects after church, but he seemed up for it, so we went.  He never bids on anything and is willing to haul all my purchases to the Jeep while I keep bidding, so I couldn’t pass up that offer.
I managed to fill our Jeep to the brim.  It was so full that we couldn’t squeeze in 2 antique doors I purchased, and we didn’t have any bungee cords with us to strap them to the roof (must remember to keep some in there!), so my husband had to go back and pick them up today.
This was one of those auction houses where the finer antiques and more valuable items are in the building, and the lower value items are outside.  I always go outside, because that’s where the great deals are found.  Usually that’s where you’ll find all the old stuff that has been kept in barns and has years worth of dirt and cobwebs, but I get excited when I see dirt and cobwebs at an auction.  Had they been cleaned up first, the prices would be much higher.
I’ll show you some of the things I decided to sell in my shop.  If we were anywhere near starting to remodel my workshop, I would have kept these old locker baskets, but I don’t see that remodel starting for quite awhile.  Only 1 is left (#28), and it’s available HERE. IT HAS SOLD.
This lone little red drawer is perfect for some holiday decorating.  It’s available HERE.
My mom had one of these desk organizers in the 70’s and I’ve picked up several of them over the last few years.  They originally have a faux wood look, but it looks like plastic wood, so I always paint them and let some of the dark undertones show through.  It has sold.
I love old sock stretchers, but this is the first one I’ve found at a reasonable price.  It’s listed HERE.
I love living in the Midwest, because it means I’m able to get old farmhouse finds, like this antique corn dryer.  It’s available HERE.
and this cast iron stovepipe damper – available HERE.
This is the most unique old shoe form on a stand I’ve ever found…

Check out the beautiful, big rusty gear used as the base.

I also brought home a box full of antique molding.  Five of them had beautiful blue, chippy paint.  I turned them all into wall hooks.

This one was unpainted, so I painted and distressed it, then added a really pretty metal clip.

Okay, on to a few other things I worked on.  An old decorative wall plaque got a makeover with some white paint and pretty hooks.
I hope your eyes don’t roll back in your head, but you won’t be surprised that my husband and I worked on more of them last week.

This fluted pan has such pretty patina.

I picked a similarly aged pie tin for the bottom.

My husband found this set of square enamelware pans in a thrift store.  I didn’t plan on turning them into a tired stand but he really wanted to do it.  I keep selling the tiered stands he uses for his K-cups, so I think he hopes this one won’t sell so he can keep it.

These are a really pretty gray and the top one includes the lid.

A pretty splattered enamelware bowl paired with an enamelware pie plate.

I had one more enamelware pie plate, so I turned it into a pedestal stand.

This one was made from 2 angel food pans and a large cake pan.  The spindles came from an antique corner shelf stand.

As soon as I finish photographing them, I’ll show you some of the things I’m keeping for myself that I bought at the auction.  I don’t swoon easily, but the things I’m keeping definitely are swoon-worthy!  I have a few more things from the auction to add to the shop, once I get them cleaned up and photographed.

Blessings,

Angie

I was raised in the Midwest, and yes, it is a fabulous source for antiques and used good with all it’s auctions! I miss them.
I love your mail holder. I have one exactly like yours.
I do like your tiered stands-very unique.

  3. I swoon over all your stuff! I do like a good auction, and I’m guessing you’re glad you went. Can’t wait to see all your other creations!

  4. You always find and have the most amazing pieces. I have not hit an auction in years and it used to be a weekly thing for me. I will have to start watching the ads again and start enjoying them once again.

  5. I love all your amazing treasures! The corn dryer is my favorite…who knew there was such a thing??

  6. Angie – I enjoy your blog and your creations so much! I’m waiting to see more of the guest room. We are in the process of building one ourselves and am looking forward to seeing the creative ways you complete yours!!!

  7. You do such nice work…I love the way you put things together!!! I think I need to go to an auction…although here in the Northwest we don’t have so many old barns to rummage threw. 🙂 You are lucky!

  8. What an auction that was! You sure do find the best junk and I love what you’ve done with everything.

  9. You haven’t made a tiered stand that I didn’t love, these are all great. But I can’t believe you let the locker baskets go.

  10. I am in love with the tiered stands but I think the white enamel pan ones are still my favorite. I guess they are hard to find since I don’t see another one posted here. I love auctions and I do love to bid but I don’t mind the hauling either. I don’t like to see my wife carrying anything remotely heavy. I guess it’s a man thing!

  11. Angie … I just don’t know how you do it !!! You just keep on amazing us with your creative ideas. That’s a lot of work and you seem to get so much done in so little time. Need to find your secret.

  13. Boy I sure want to come to that auction! I’ve never been to one and it sounds like fun Angie! You have some great creations and finds in that shop of yours. I also created a tiered fluted dish and it sold in a second at our craft fair… I almost wish it didn’t I wanted to keep it. Your treasures are amazing!
