Big Blue Finds a Home – {my weekend getaway}

If you remember last year about this time, I brought home a huge antique shop counter, which I called, Big Blue.  Big Blue got a gray makeover during the summer, but I didn’t have anywhere to put it, because it wouldn’t even fit through the doors in my house, so it’s been in my garage ever since.
I would love to someday own a brick and mortar shop, but not knowing if that would ever happen, I decided to list it on Craigslist.  I wasn’t willing to come down much on the price – I just decided if it sold at my price, I’d let it go and if it didn’t, I’d keep it and hope to find a way to use it someday.
Well…it sold.  It actually sold several months ago, but the new owner was getting her shop floors refinished, so we just held it for her until she was ready for it.  When she was ready to get it, the cost to have it moved was outrageously high, so she wasn’t sure how she was going to get it.  I told my husband, and he said he had a week of vacation time scheduled, so we could take it to her.  It saved her several hundred dollars, and we got a weekend getaway, so it was a win-win.
We rented a UHaul trailer, loaded the shop counter, and left for Ann Arbor, Michigan on Friday.
And it now resides in the future home of Dear Golden and it looks like it was always meant to be there.  I don’t know if she plans to keep it the way I painted it, but seeing it in her space, I think it would be beautiful painted the same gray as the door behind it, with her business name painted in place of where I added the metal scroll in the center.
The shop space is in a beautiful old brick building, in downtown Ann Arbor, which is undergoing some remodeling.  It’ll be a few months more before she opens, so I look forward to seeing how it looks when the shop is open for business.  Since I don’t have my own brick and mortar shop, I’m thrilled to see Big Blue end up in such a beautiful one.
Lauren, the owner of Dear Golden is a vintage clothing purveyor.  She currently has an online shop, and sells by appointment in her current location.
It’s the first time in quite a few years that my husband and I have gone on a road trip without any of our kids and I really enjoyed our time together.  We drove through some really charming little towns, like Chelsea, MI (homeplace of actor Jeff Daniels and home of Jiffy baking mixes).  It was late at night by the time we passed through, so no shops were open, but just the drive through downtown was worth it.  They still had all their Christmas lights up and it looked beautiful.

After delivering the counter on Saturday morning, we left for home, but ran into snow in Indiana in the afternoon.  We decided to play it safe and stay in a hotel for the night.

The next day, the roads were clear, so we headed for home, but stopped at plenty of antique and thrift stores along the way, and just took our time.  When we came across this old brick building in downtown, La Porte, Indiana, with MY name on it – I knew I was meant to do some shopping in that town.  We ended up staying for over 3 hours and visited 3 antique stores.  I was mainly looking for more enamelware and pans to create more of my tiered stands, and succeeded in finding plenty, as well as some other good stuff, which I’ll share with you later in the week.

And, of course…I had to get my photo taken with that sign.  I wish I could have stayed until after dark, so I could have seen my name in lights!

It’s evening now, and we’re still driving and don’t expect to be back home until pretty late tonight, but it was totally worth it.  It’ll be good to be back home though, and after 3 days of not working on a single project, I’m itching to get back to work!

Blessings,
Angie
