Repurposed Antique Headboard into Chalkboard…with a Wreath Graphic Embellishment

Do you all still love chalkboards, or do you think the craze is starting to pass?  I still love them, and don’t care if they are no longer “in”.  They are so “old “school”, which of course, I love.   worked on a few more chalkboard projects last week, but didn’t get them all photographed yet, but wanted to share this one.

I seriously don’t know how I accumulate so many old bed headboards, but I still have  few more in my workshop that I’ve never done anything with.  They are like stray puppies that follow me home.  I needed the posts from the side of this headboard to use on a tiered stand, so my husband cut those off, leaving me the main part of the headboard to work with.  This piece is identical to the chalkboard I made a few years ago, that included the legs.

I thought about turning it into a sign, but couldn’t decide what to put on it, so I made another chalkboard.  It looked fine, but the pretty shape seemed like it was asking for some other embellishment.

I loved the antique wreath graphic that I used on my seed bag pillow, and it seemed like the perfect shape for the sides of the headboard.  It came from an antique piano advertisement bookmark that I shared here.

I cut a vinyl stencil, then spent the next 20 minutes trying to get it placed correctly.  That’s always the part I like least about stenciling.  Once it looked right close enough, I gently sponged some white paint over it.

I distressed the edge, and a bit over the wreath image.  I’m thrilled how it turned out.  It’s available in my shop here.

Shipping those large items is not fun. Do you do you own packing?

  7. At every garage sale I went to last week, I was on the hunt for a headboard. I did see some, and I liked them but they all had that word on them that tells me I’m too late…. SOLD.
