While my family watched the Super Bowl last night, I was puttering around, trying to decide what to do with myself. I wasn’t in the mood to work on a big project, and really just wanted to work on something that didn’t require a lot of planning or thought. I went down to the basement to look for something that would be an easy project, and spotted this basket that I picked up several months ago. I bought it with the intent of repurposing just the handle on it, because it has a very “cutesy” country look that isn’t my style, but decided I would do a basket makeover on it instead.
I used my leftover paint from the Antique Dressing Table makeover, and quickly covered the outside and inside of the basket – cutesy country look, be gone!
To give the paint an aged look, I used the same process as I used on my French Style “Antique” Basket, except I used Cashmere antiquing powder, from The Vintage Storehouse Restoration Company. They have a great tutorial on using antiquing powder HERE. I love using antiquing powder, because it gets into all the grooves and cracks better than antiquing wax does.
While I waited for my paint to dry, I got out a stack of old book and magazine pages, and started making rolled book pages. It was another easy, no-brainer project – just roll, glue, repeat.
I’ve added the basket with all the book pages to my online shop, so it’s available as in instant vignette.
Here’s the before and after side by side.

Love that color! Great makeover!
What an improvement 🙂 Out with the 80’s look and in with an update. Great find and great redo.
That basket looks so much better…I see those at the thrift store all the time…next time I’ll have to pick one up!
What a great makeover! I love anything with book pages and grey is fast becoming my favorite color.
super shabby cute 🙂
So much better now that the hearts and cuteness are gone. Love the new look especially with the rolled up sheet music and book pages. Nice transformation Angie.
I love your basket, it looks so much better. I’ve got lots of baskets that need a new look. I’ve never used the antiquing powder before. I bet it does make antiquing a lot easier to do.
Great transformation! I have not used antiquing powder before but I love the end result. Thanks for sharing.
I never would’ve thought to paint a basket like this…you’ve made it look 1000% better! There is lots of potential for this idea…thank you for sharing!
I’ve never heard of this antiqueing powder… I like the look it gives this basket.
You’ve added some sweet character to it too!
i’d like to try the antiquing powder. where is it listed for sale at 25% off? your blog comment was cut off before it was posted. thanks
Deb, my apologies, but the 25% off code expired at the end of January, and I didn’t realize it when I wrote this post.
