I had about 10 different projects I could have worked on today, but when I woke up this morning, I realized that all I really wanted to do was clean up my kitchen and enjoy it.
I usually have way too many projects cluttering up my table and counter, so our kitchen often looks more like a workshop than a kitchen, and I often paint more than I cook in my kitchen.
I decided all my projects could wait until tomorrow, and instead I was going to surprise my family with a clean kitchen, supper ready early, and even have a homemade dessert.
I realized I couldn’t remember the last time I’d made a dessert from scratch instead of a box. I felt so domestic and Ma Ingalls-ish.
By noon, I had everything ready, and I was patting myself on the back.
My son and I sampled the hot apple crisp, and I couldn’t wait to sit down with the rest of the family for supper.
My son was equally motivated, because our homeschool group was meeting at a local park to go sledding, so he got his schoolwork done early, and we spent the next few hours relaxing and having fun.
He humored me and took a ride down the hill with me.
All that cleaning, cooking and fresh air wiped me out, and I could barely keep my eyes open when I drove home. I laid down to take a nap, and by the time I woke up it was dark outside. I laid in bed for several minutes, trying to figure out if it was morning or night.
When my head cleared, I jumped out of bed and rushed into the kitchen to heat up the soup and set the table, only to discover that my family had already eaten!
My vision of our cozy family dinner around the clean table hadn’t worked out, but every single one of them complimented me on my homemade apple crisp, so that made me feel better.
I guess I’ll just have to try again,
… and not hopefully not sleep through dinner next time.

Oh YUM!! Now I’m inspired to make this. It’s been far too long. And since it’s a desert my husband doesn’t like, I can eat it all! lol Thanks for sharing. 🙂
Lucky you – mine got completely eaten up!
The apple crisp looks really good! Pretty apple pics, too.
I do that nap thing late in the day frequently too, and when I wake up it’s dark…then, I’m not sleepy when it’s bed time, so I end up getting on the computer till the wee hours making several blog posts to publish later. We have tough jobs with all that we have to do being moms, homemakers, cooks, bloggers, and the hundred other things we have to do, so it’s okay to take our naps whenever we can!
I always enjoy your posts.

Believe me, I’ll probably be awake half the night after my long nap, Judy!
I know just what you mean by long naps. If I lay down, even on the sofa, for a “short” nap….it is hours before I wake. Still sleep through the night but…those long naps are sure nice, especially on a dreary winter day or….on my front porch on a nice, warm summer day with the ceiling fan running and my old dog laying next to me…..ahhhhhhhh…… Summer….will you ever arrive?????
btw….that apple crisp looks positively yummy…..would you mind sharing your recipe?

Thanks for sharing your real life with us Angie. Last week I called my husband and told him to bring home a pizza for dinner because the only cooking in our kitchen that had gone on all day was me mixing paint. The counter was full of paint containers in all colors from my projects. The home office and basement are carpeted in drop cloths. Our dreams of a perfectly clean and organized home will have to wait for another day or just remain in our heads. Have a good day Angie!

Angie … the pie looks delicious and must have been since it is all gone. Looks like you had fun snow sliding.
I am sure that nap was just what you needed.
Yum. Can taste it from here. Sorry you missed dinner with your family but you must have needed the rest. I always set my alarm when I nap…just in case LOL
Awwwww, bless…despite missing out on that big family dinner, sounds like you had one wonderful day and your family was grateful for all of your efforts! It’s nice to be appreciated, isn’t it? There’s nothing better than getting to spend time having fun with the kids and I’ll bet your son will never forget this day! Plus APPLE CRISP always makes things better! It looks sooooooo delicious…now I’m going to have to make some, too!
Sounds like a perfect day! Where’s the ice cream!
