How to Make DIY Canvas Banners for Special Events
Last month I had a special request from a customer for an alphabet stencil.
The timing was perfect, because my niece also wanted me to make canvas banners for her wedding.
I designed a stencil with the complete alphabet and included a small heart and musical note, which can be used as spacers between words.
When I checked at my local craft store for pennants, I was frustrated to find that the only canvas pennants they had were already connected together and didn’t have the right number of pennants for the words she wanted for her banners.
The individual pennants they sold were all either too large or really small, so I decided to make my own canvas pennants. They can be customized with any words desired for weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, and home decor.
How to Make Custom DIY Canvas Banners
Supplies Needed (includes affiliate links in bold text):
- chipboard pennants
- canvas fabric
- school glue
- scissors
- Alphabet stencil with heart & musical note
- stencil brush
- acrylic or fabric paint
- twine
Directions:
- Use foam brush to apply a light coat of glue on one side of pennants.
- Place pennants glue side down on canvas. Alternate them up and down for the best fit.
- Let pennants dry for a few hours, then cut them out.
- Position the stencil over each pennant. You can tape it in place or use spray adhesive, but my daughter just held it while I painted.
- Using a fairly dry brush, paint each letter, then lift stencil and set it aside to dry for a few minutes.
- Poke holes through the fabric to expose the holes in the pennants, then lace pennants together with twine.
Note – I bought 1/3 yard of fabric, which was enough to make about 30 pennants.
Two of the banners were hung on the pavilion where the reception was held, and one was displayed on the guest signing table.
The alphabet stencil measures approx. 16″ wide x 9″ tall.
It’s available in my online shop HERE.
Come back tomorrow when I’ll be sharing several more projects I worked on for her wedding!
Vaya con Dios,
Love these! We have three weddings and three bridal showers in the next few months and guess who is in charge of decorations! I love the canvas idea and using the pennant backing is a great idea for stability and stopping the annoying curling! I especially love that you have paint all over your fingers (I usually have more paint on me than the project)!
What a great idea! I definitely plan on trying it! Thanks!
Nice, Angie. I’m gonna have that alphabet stencil one of these days!
