Small Side Table Upcyled in Black and White Buffalo Check
Do you ever buy furniture at thrift stores or yard sales? I don’t often, but when I found a pair of these small side tables at a thrift store for $15 for the set, I couldn’t pass them up.
Clearly, the previous owners have kids because they had dried food all over them.
As a mom of four, no judgement here!
After cleaning really well, it was time to transform one of them.
How to give a Small Side Table a Trendy Farmhouse Look

After removing the tile top, my husband painted one of the bases black.
Paint Base
The mottled appearance of the tile just wasn’t the look I wanted.
So out came the spray paint!
Whenever I need really great coverage, I always use Rustoleum Ultra Cover, this time in Canyon Black.
One or two coats always does the trick.
Saving large boxes for painting things on makes it easy to move around if I need to rotate it.
This is the same box that I painted my Kitchen Wood Riser on.
Paint Tile
But I should have had my husband do the spray painting, because my hair sheds worse than a dog and two strands fell on the tile while I was painting.
Of course, I didn’t have any tweezers that I could remove them with before the paint dried, so I had to quickly use my finger.
Next, time to give it a buffalo check look!
Add Buffalo Checks
For that, I used the new Mini Buffalo Plaid Transfer with White Chalk Paste and the Large 4″ Squeegee.
When putting a transfer on surfaces like tile, glass, or metal, fuzzing many times is key.
Otherwise, it will stick like crazy. I use the Fuzzing Cloth, but a terrycloth towel will also work.
Seal to Protect
Since my small side table will see a lot of use, I used two light coats of Triple-Thick Crystal Clear Glaze, letting the first coat dry before adding the next.
I will use this transfer over and over again. I love the size of the checks. I have another makeover in mind right now!
Buffalo check looks great all year, but especially for fall and winter.
Normally, I don’t have a shag rug on my porch. But my living room is too dark to take photos in and this was the only rug I had that wasn’t huge.
I love to transform my garage sale and thrift shop finds into fun and inexpensive decor with paint and transfers!
Vaya con Dios,
Angie
Oh my goodness! I adore what you did with those tables – and I have that small gingham check CC stencil just waiting for me to use it! I have a couple of small wood TV trays that are going to get “checked”! Thanks for sharing.
Isn’t the checks adorable LaVonda? I can’t wait to use it more!
Hi! You did a great job!
I do have a question about the Krylon Triple Thick Glaze you used: One reviewer said” …even when dry the surface is tacky”.
Did you find this to be true?
Thanks!
C
It wasn’t for me Christine.
Fun upcycle! Love the black and white checkered pattern.
My Dad has two of these tables and I can’ wait to get my hands on them and do what you did..I love the new look. Thanks for the inspiration.
Hi Angie, I want to place my order when the new stencils will be out. Some one on facebook said about the middle of the month. I will keep looking for them. Just wanted you to know. Weather here has bee good but I am looking forward to fall colors on the trees.
Love what you did with the black and white table. Black is my favorite accent color.
Thanks, Sandy!
