My Bags are Packed…1880’s Style

I love all the fresh ideas out in blogland
for repurposing vintage suitcases,
so I’m thrilled to get my hands on a good
old Samsonite that has passed its prime as luggage.
I’d previously rehabbed a suitcase that was nearly
identical to the one I used for this project, with antique dictionary pages
and wanted to do something a little different,
so this time I decided to line the insides with, what else?…
Clothing pages, of course!
What could be more appropriate for a suitcase?!
Not just any old clothing pages though.
These pages are over 120 years old
and come from an 1880’s ladies magazine.
Each magazine had a fashions for the month section,
that make you just want to drool looking at them.
Everything from evening gowns, walking gowns & night gowns,
to capes, aprons, cloaks, undergarments and head pieces.
These gals dressed better going to bed than I do on my most dressed-up day.
Everything a well-bred lady would have worn in the 1880’s,
and there were children’s fashions as well.
Some issues even had colorized sections featuring
“La Mode Parisiennes” (The Parisian Fashion).
Even women in the 1800’s loved the Paris style!
I’ll just shut up now and let you oogle over these pages
(and I hope you like the suitcase rehab as well).
I’ll show you the process at the end.
“La Mode Pariseinne”
I have some vintage crocheted lace that I may use on the
inside edges to give it a more feminine, finished look, but haven’t decided yet.
The Process
Hard-body suitcases work best – like the Samsonite in the back.
Strip the inner lining.
Gather your pages.
Play around with pages until you find a pleasing layout.
Use Modge Podge to adhere the pages.
Allow pages to dry for about 30 minutes,
then add a top coat of Modge Podge.
For less expense, use regular Elmer’s Glue to adhere the pages,
then use Modge Podge for the top coat.
Allow to dry overnight – the bubbles will disappear as the pages fully dry.
Use a Magic Eraser to remove unwanted scuff marks
from the outside of the suitcase.
You probably won’t be able to get them all off,
so I use Valspar Antique Glaze over the whole outside
to give it a more polished, aged look
-vs- beat-up old luggage look.
Here’s the first suitcase I did with dictionary pages.
The full post about it is here.
