Oven Range Hood from a Reclaimed Antique Door

It’s been a few years since we remodeled our farmhouse kitchen (see remodel reveal here), and I still love it as much as the day it was finished, but there are a few things I’d do differently now, after having lived with it for a few years.  For instance, we made open shelves from wood salvaged from an old table.

farmhouse kitchen shelves

I love those shelves in the kitchen, but we put one above our stove, and that was a big mistake.  I used that shelf to hold glass canisters filled with flour, sugar, etc. and the grease coming from things cooking on the stove, and the humidity from boiling pots, caused them to get completely covered with a greasy, dusty layer.  My cute glass canisters no longer looked cute, they looked GROSS.  I am NOT one to regularly clean my shelves or glass canisters, so it was time to remove that shelf.

Obviously, that was going to leave a big gaping space above the stove, and the logical thing to put there was an oven range hood, which is what we should have done in the first place.

When Westside Wholesale offered me the opportunity to review one of their products, I knew exactly what I wanted – an oven range hood!

We chose the Broan Stainless Steel Range Hood.

You might be wondering why anyone would order an oven range hood from an online retailer, instead of just purchasing it at their local home improvement store.  The reason is, because Westside Wholesale offered this product for less than any of our local stores, AND they offer free shipping on items prices $199 and above.   I would have paid more than $30 more to buy this same range hood at either of the two large home improvement stores nearby me.

You also don’t pay sales tax (except in NV & Kentucky), so that saves you a chunk of change, AND Westside Wholesale has a Rewards Program that gives you “Westside Dollars” on many of their items.  The range hood we selected earns $44 Westside Dollars, which is redeemable on your next purchase!  Some products even offer double and triple rewards.  That’s something your local store does not offer!

Westside Wholesale carries everything from appliances and light fixtures, to tools and landscaping supplies, so it has most of the same things and same brands as you’d find in your local store, but the prices are better, and you get free front door delivery.

Within days, it was delivered straight to my front door.    I’m not so sure my husband was as giddy about their speedy delivery, because I started nagging him right away about getting it installed.

We chose this range hood, because we wanted to design our own farmhouse style cover for it, and this range hood had an easy-to-access front control panel, washable filters, and 3 settings on the lights – dim, medium and bright.  I like to leave a night light on in the kitchen at night, so the dim setting is perfect.

My husband asked me what I wanted to use to create our range hood cover, and I remembered an antique door that I’ve had for about 4 years.  The door came out of a historic courthouse that had been torn down.  What I didn’t realize when I bought the door is that it was much larger than your typical door, because the courthouse had really tall doorways.  Since we could never use it in our home, I was thrilled to find a new way to use it.

I 100% KNOW that I took a photo of that door, so you could see what it looked like before my husband cut it apart, but alas, it is lost somewhere in the photo abyss on my computer, so you’ll just have to visualize a tall wooden old  door, that had large wooden panels.

You’ll also have to visualize the process of how my husband made it, because he worked on it while I was out of town, and I failed to ask him to take photos of the process.  Suffice it to say, it turned out fabulous!  You an see how he built it so that it just fits around the range hood.

The cover isn’t quite finished yet, so I’ll be sharing how it looks when it’s finished soon, but I’m in love with it already.

Thank you SO much to Westside Wholesale for helping us get moving on this project.  I might have been looking at dusty, greasy jars for another year, if it wasn’t for them.

I want you all to know that Westside Wholesale did provide me with this range hood, but all the opinions are completely my own.  I can honestly say that I wholeheartedly recommend them.  My husband WORKS at our local home improvement store, so we get an employee discount, but  I’ll now start shopping with Westside Wholesale, because even with our employee discount, the price from Westside Wholesale was was still much better.
