In this post: A Tea Towel Display Shelf Christmas Upcycle
We’ve been cleaning out the living room in preparation for the crowd that will be here for Christmas. One of the things that went away with the purge is my antique piano turned into a desk. Honestly, I wasn’t using it as a desk because I do almost all of my work in my bathtub on my bathtub tray table or the farmhouse kitchen table. Don’t be shocked, but I asked my husband to dismantle the piano desk. It is simply too heavy to move and we don’t have anywhere else to go with it. He saved all of the wood that could be used for something else, so you might see some parts of it in other projects later on. He also saved the metal name plate of the piano company that made it. I’ve always loved that. Right next to the piano desk was a tea towel display shelf that I’ve had for at least two years. Who keeps an old tea towel shelf in their living room that isn’t being used? You don’t have to answer that because the answer is pretty clear! Hoarders do! Rather than take it out to my junk shop or donate it back to the store where I bought it, I decided to upcycle it for Christmas. After removing all the cobwebs that had accumulated, I gave it two coats of Dixie Belle’s barn red paint. I lightly distressed it to let the wood peek through. While at JoAnn’s last week, I spotted these unfinished wood mini signs, and just because they are cute, I bought them. I didn’t know what I would use them for, but they were 70% off. So it was a no-brainer. After painting the shelf, I wanted to find something to decorate the back with. I realized the tree farm sign fit perfectly under the center rounded back of the shelf. On the back, I added white paper to make the words stand out. All that was left was to put bottle brush trees on the shelf and hang a cute towel.
The adorable towel was a dollar store find!
This will be the last project that I share this year. My mom is here now and my two older sons will arrive in the next few days. Did you know I have a tip jar? I do! The best tip you can give me is by leaving a comment, pinning, or sharing this post. It makes my heart so happy! Merry Christmas to each and every one of you. I appreciate you taking the time to stop by and the sweet comments you leave.

Cute, simple idea for the shelf! And I wouldn’t have thought to use white paper on the back of the sign to make it pop. Thanks for sharing and Merry Christmas to you and your family!
Love the idea of putting the white paper behind the cutout design to make it pop…..,such a simple idea but I wouldn’t have thought of it. The shelf is adorable.
Have a Merry Christmas and a biessed New Year!
It’s so good to see you getting stronger all the time! <3! I can tell by the increasing number of hands-on projects! I love what you did with this shelf! Have a wonderful time with the family. I'm envious, though very happy for you, because we are totally scattered. Vermont, Georgia, Colorado, Minnesota and Michigan! Blessed Christmas and New year to you all!
It’s funny that you say that Derry because just last week I realized that I could use my can opener that I haven’t been able to use since my stroke. I even asked my husband if he bought a new one but he said he didn’t and I was so surprised that it was the same one I’ve been trying to use all along.
Have a very merry Christmas and thanks for noticing my improved health.
Hi Great Job! Really cute !
The shelf is darling, Angie. Don’t you just love bottle brush trees? I have a ton of them and I’m crazy about them. I think it’s because they remind me of my childhood. I have a couple really old ones, but most are new. I don’t care, I love them all!
Do you know yours is one of the first blogs I signed up for when I first began reading blogs and it is still one of my favorites. I always read it to the exclusion of a few others I’ve signed onto since.
I send my wishes for a wonderful Christmas with your family. May it be “Merry and Bright” and filled with Joy and Laughter and Love.
I am looking forward to the surprises and projects you come up with for us in 2019!
