Valentines Decor & Mother of the Groom Clothing Questions | Talk of the Town #58

It just hit me today that my oldest son’s wedding is about four months away, and I don’t have a clue what I’m going to wear.

I dress up maybe once a year, at the very most, and even then what I wear is really just my “Sunday best” (which I rarely even wear on Sundays), and isn’t really dress attire.

All that to say, I can’t remember the last time I had to shop for a really nice garment for a special occasion.  So I’m not sure where to begin.

The wedding will be in June in California, and it’s been 16 years since I’ve been in California in June, so I don’t know what style of dress would be best.

If you have any advice, or websites to steer me to, I’m all ears.

Okay, enough about me and my clothing insecurities … because it’s time to party!

  1. Hi Angie – Thank you for hosting! My favorite feature was the pallet junk hearts – totes adorbs! As for the wedding dress – wear whatever makes you feel fabulous, but not as fabulous as the bride! Exciting times ahead. Hugs, Holly

  2. Thanks for the feature, girls! And thanks for hosting this fun little link party. Have a lovely day!

  3. about what to wear…first off I would talk to the bride to be…find out what the “theme” of the wedding will be….color etc….what will her mom be wearing etc…then you can narrow down the list of what you will be looking for for YOU….and June in Calif…well depending on which part of CA could be cloudy….I know the southern part has May gray and June gloom….meaning marine layer in the morning…or all day if it feels like it…lol…and can extend inland a ways…we lived in San Diego county many years then moved up to Murrieta, which is in Riverside county…and we always had the May gray and June gloom…so maybe a pretty wrap also…and congratulations on the upcoming wedding

Hi! On One Good Thing BY Jillee, Jillee HIGHLY recommends the website “ThredUp”. It’s high quality second hand clothes that you pick out online and they mail them to you! She says the prices and quality are fantastic and she was highly satisfied. I would try them if I had a need, honestly. Try them and let us know what you think!

  5. Congratulations! Exciting news.

These choices are more expensive, but jjshouse.com/Cheap-Mother-Of-The-Bride-Dresses-c8/ has a good selection in a variety of styles. (Many are far less modest than I am comfortable with, but there are a few truly beautiful dresses.) My personal favorite (though I’ve never bought anything from them; I’m too broke!) is eshakti.com. It sells classic dresses that I believe would flatter anybody, and here’s the best part: you can customize them when ordering, for very little added cost. You can adjust skirt and sleeve length, neckline, etc.

    Good luck!

A June wedding in California is going to be great. But what you wear is going to some degree depend on where in California it is happening.

Mark Twain said June in San Francisco was the worst winter he had ever experienced .. or words to that effect. Days will be balmy and 60 to 70 degrees, but nights can be very cold and windy and even a really heavy coat will not keep you warm. Something to do with June gloom and inversion. So check that out before you go.

Southern California will be hot in June. Not usually 101+ degrees, hot but it could happen. With nights only getting down to the mid 70’s. But for sure light, breezy, summer clothes will work best for you here.

  7. Stephanie Mudd Carrico says

Definitely check with the bride-to-be. Here it the bride and mother of the bride that want to shine and the mother of the groom is a little more subdued/casual. But go with what makes you feel beautiful/comfortable.

  8. Thanks for the party, Angie!

  9. Been missing this party lately. Glad I could catch you this time, Angie. Thanks so much for hosting!

  10. Hi there! Weddings are so exciting, but can be stressful too. I agree with the others and talk with the bride and see what her mother is wearing. The weather will depend on where in Ca. you will be. I am in Central Ca. and June weather is very nice. Usually not to hot yet, but perfect, in my opinion. Hope you can figure something out!

  11. In addition to asking the bride and MOTB what she will be wearing, I suggest a personal stylist. I know it may sound ‘flashy’ but the services are free but they do work on commission. I would make it clear of what you are looking for and only interested in spending XX amount. They will fit you in an appropriate style and maybe introduce you to a style you may have never thought of trying!! Good luck!! I can’t wait to see what you chose!

  12. Barbara Mawdsley says

Mother of the Groom outfit. First, let the bride shine first and foremost. Secondly, the mother of the bride should pick first. That will give you some guidance. You probably shouldn’t wear black but don’t eliminate it because it no longer signifies mourning as it did 20 years ago. Make sure it is comfortable. Check out Pinterst. Make your own pinterest board of dresses that interest you. They could be dressy pantsuits too Ask Hi, Sugarplum and see if she and her mother can help. I’m no fashionista either. My entire wardrobe fits on 60 hangers and I hang t-shirts and jeans. I alway keep a black dress that I can wear a million ways thanks to jackets, scarves and jewelry. I still have my Mother-of-the-Bride dress just in case. My Mother-Of-the Groom dress left long ago.

  13. Family pictures are very important, you will be happier if you match somewhat (as a stepmother who clashed in wedding pictures, ask … Color, style, dressy, casual). I live in CA and June can be cool or warm, a matching cover would be helpful. Love your blog!

  14. How excited Angie! I am sure you will find just the perfect outfit that goes with the wedding party and makes you feel good too. Thank you so much for another great party!
