I bought a wooden tray a few weeks ago at a thrift store, and pulled it out recently to work on. I batted around a few ideas of how I wanted to fix it up, and what popped into my head, was to make it look like the top of an old shipping crate. I searched for inspiration on Google, and ebay, and then I found this antique crate on Etsy.
The crate is from the same company as this early 1920’s image I shared here. That decided it for me.
I opened up my Silhouette program, and designed a cut file to make an adhesive stencil, changing the wording just a bit.
The finish on the tray was pretty worn looking, so I sanded it a bit first, then used black paint to stencil the words onto the tray. I waxed it to protect its new look.
I love how a little paint and wax can transform something drab into something with character again.
