Spicing up an Antique Sewing Table Drawer

Does salvage make you feel just a wee bit giddy?  I’m really not a giddy kind of gal, but when I see something made of old wood that is broken, my heart rate speeds up a bit!  I know a lot of people are sensitive when comes to antique pieces, and don’t like to see them painted or repurposed, but when I find something that is broken, I feel okay about tinkering with them.  This cute little drawer was originally the front drawer of an antique sewing table.  The sewing machine was very damaged and the table is missing the side drawers, and this little remaining drawer is missing the decorative pieces that would have been on the two sides.  It was a perfect candidate for some fussing with.

My husband cut the two long drawer slides off the back of it, then I painted and distressed it a bit.  I attached D-ring hangers on the back of it, so it can hang on a wall, but since I’m listing it in my shop, I didn’t want to put extra holes in my wall to hang it for photos.  It’s available HERE. It makes an adorable spice rack now.  I have 9 spice tins in it, but it would probably hold one or two more bottles that are more narrow than the tins.  I think it would also work great in a craft room, to hold jars filled with small pieces or supplies like glitter.

I’ve been sorting through things in my workshop this week, and am getting some items listed in my online shop, like this vintage orchard basket.  I’ll keep adding more items over the next few days, so check regularly to see what’s new in the shop.

I also listed the bushel basket that I painted as one of my 12 Days of Christmas projects.  It’s available here.

  1. Beautiful detail on the drawer and great idea! thanks so much for your inspiration.

  2. Dear Angie,

Your website is really giving me hope for my plain furniture. I just need the money to purchase all the paints, varnish and tools. I have no idea how to begin making money from home which is something I believe a lot of people would like to do.
Angie, your shelving is stunning along with your other projects, you inspire many people to have ago, to vamp up and reclaim unloved pieces of furniture, making them into beautiful works of art.
Keep up the good work Angie, you brighten my day.

    Kind regards

    Rachel

  3. I did the same thing with a drawer from one of my sewing machines like this also. Only I added it to the top piece of the sewing machine that I painted with the chalk board paint so it could be a memo board with holder at the bottom. The sewing machine originally belonged to my grandmother and was passes down to my aunt. She left it in a barn where it got completely rusted up. I now have the sewing machine out in my garden outside my quilting studio. I kept the drawers for myself but wanted to give my sister something from the machine so I made the memo board for her. Love how I can keep parts of it here and there!

  4. So pretty, Angie! You remind me I need to use drawers more often in my decorating!

  5. Love the drawers – pure inspiration for me to do something with the stack of drawers waiting for some decent weather.

  6. You find the most awesome things, Miss Angie. The detail on the wood is just delicious. What a cute little rack it made.

That is such a great idea, you have such a talent,i guess you just have to go for it and if it doesn’t work try something else.I just haven’t taken that first step, but i so like what you do.Thank you so much for all the ideas you send out i truly appreciate them.

  8. I have a good size collection of treadle sewing machine drawers. I have had them hung on the wall as shadow boxes or shelves. I use some as junk drawer organizers, others for sorting mail, bills, etc. I love the detail on the fronts and sides. Going to find a couple for my spices…thanks for the inspiration.

  9. It turned out really nice Angie. Lots of uses for those small drawers. Thanks for the idea.
