In my quest to photography as many old barns as I can, I’ve also become curious about the names of different styles of barns. I photographed this old red barn in Illinois a few weeks ago, and did a little research, and discovered that this type of barn is often called a “prairie barn”. The red paint on this one is fading, but it’s still very quaint. I really like the two sets of 9-pane windows and the dutch door. From this angle you can’t see it, but there is a hay loft under the peak of the roof.
I photographed about 6 different barns on one road trip, so I’ll be sharing more each week!

I didn’t know that each style of barn has its own name…thank you for sharing that! Also, thank you soooooooo very much for generously sharing this fantastic capture of such a lovely old barn! I LOVE that weathered old roof and the windows and doors almost make it look like it has a face! I can’t wait to see your other barn photos…if they are half as beautiful as this one, it will be well worth the wait!
