KISS: Easy Rustic Bench Makeover in Just 3 Steps!

I’ve been thinking I need to do a weekly KISS project (keep it simple stupid).  It’s a good reminder for me that not every project needs to have 20 steps to complete, and challenges me to keep projects as simple as possible.

Last week when I brought home a bunch of bargains from a thrift store grand re-opening, one of my purchases was this  rustic bench.

It’s super sturdy, has great wood, and I knew it wouldn’t take much effort to give it a more farmhouse look.

In fact, I did it in just 3 steps!

Step 1 –  I sanded the top down to the bare wood to remove the shiny varnish on it.

Step 2 – I used black paint with the Poultry Feeds stencil and Mini Chicken stencil to give it an instant farmhouse look.

Step 3 – I didn’t want to stain the wood and make it look too dark again, so I just gave it a coat of low gloss Tung Oil.  (affiliate link), which freshens the wood and really brings out the details in it, without a glossy finish.

That’s it!  Talk about keeping it simple, it took all of 20 minutes to finish and I love it now!

I haven’t decided where I’ll use it yet, but right now it makes a great little table to enjoy under a shade tree in my front yard.  There won’t be too many more nice summer days left, so I want to kick off my shoes and enjoy every last one of them while I can!

My gravel road is calling.  I think I’ll take the dogs on a walk.

So, would you all like to see KISS become a regular weekly feature?  I’d love to hear your feedback!

  1. Yes…I’m new to the painting or fixing up odd items and appreciate easy projects. Good also for those who don’t have a lot of time. Love all your projects!

  2. Awwww, this is just darling…I really love how you are able to take a simple project and make it shine like this…this is a stool I think anyone would be more than happy to display in their home…I know I would! I have three little wooden stools that I bought at auction…one very similar to the one you have made over here and now, after seeing how you took this little stool and turned it into a superstar, I want to make over all three of mine!

I hope you and yours are enjoying the last vestiges of Summer 2015! We have just received relief from an awful heatwave here and now I am ready for Autumn to bring its cool crisp air right on in!

    • Oh, for goodness sake…sorry, I meant to say that, yes, I would love if you would make KISS a weekly feature because I’m not very gifted in the ways of repurposing, so the simpler, the better! 🙂

Your Bench looks a lot like an end table I had once. I love it anyway. I love all the cute stuff you do. I think KISS ptojects are a great idea. Sometimes I only need 3 or 4 steps, and I can take it from there. Keep it up .I really look forward to tour posts.
