Patriotic Tin Can Indoor Kitchen Herb Planters
Make these patriotic kitchen herb planters as a tribute to the good ole’ Red, White and Blue!
My obsession continues with tin cans. My project ideas seem to be as never-ending as my supply of cans!
Supplies I Used:
- Empty tin cans
- Dixie Belle Chalk Finish Paint in Barn Red, Fluff, and Yankee Blue
- Satin clear coat
- Lace trim (optional)
- Herb plants
- Foam paintbrush
Directions:
- Paint the cans using a foam paintbrush. I found it easiest to put my hand inside the can and rotate it while painting.
You can use spray paint rather than chalk paint, but I already had the perfect colors of chalk paint and I avoid the fumes from sprays if at all possible.
- Once dry, add the satin clear coat to protect it and let dry.
- Use a hot glue gun to add lace trim around the top rim of the cans.
- Put about an inch of marbles or rocks in the bottom of the can. This allows the water to go under the soil, so the roots don’t rot.
- Add about 2 inches of potting soil in the cans.
- Break off and loosen the soil from the roots and sides of the plants, then carefully place them in each can and pat them down.
I planted basil, mint, and oregano plants, but you could do others. The key is finding plants small enough to fit in the cans. If you’re starting them from seed, of course that won’t be a problem.
Water them and place them in a sunny window, and that’s it!
Plant the herbs outdoors in a few weeks, then snip off cuttings and put them in water to begin growing new roots. Replant into your tin cans, and you’ll have a fresh supply of fresh herbs all summer!

Vaya con Dios,
Love this idea! Any ideas on upcycling the large plastic Folger’s (and large creamer) containers? I do plant in some of them, but my family goes through so many that there is no way to use them all.
I would love to sign up for daily emails, but the link doesn’t seem to work. Help!
At the very bottom of every post is a place to sign up that will work Ruth.
These are adorable. Upcycling tin cans are right up there with the glass jars.
I love your patriotic cans! And, I love Dixie Belle Paint. It works great on everything!
Thanks Virginia!
