On the Workbench and In the Shop

Last Sunday afternoon, my husband took my to an auction.  Believe it or not, I really didn’t feel like going.  I just wanted to relax and work on some projects after church, but he seemed up for it, so we went.  He never bids on anything and is willing to haul all my purchases to the Jeep while I keep bidding, so I couldn’t pass up that offer. I managed to fill our Jeep to the brim.  It was so {Read More}

Repurposed Trunk into Wall Cabinet

How many of you can tell what this trunk was in its previous life?  If you’re at least my age (middish 40’s), you probably know.  If you’re a young’un and think it’s a small suitcase…you’re close.  It’s a roller skates trunk.  I never had one growing up.  Every Friday night when I was in grade school, the thing to do was go to the roller skating rink.  Every Friday night, I envied the girls who had pretty white roller skates {Read More}

It’s all in the details, isn’t It?

When you look at an entire room, you often miss some of the little details that contribute to a room’s personality, yet it’s the little details that come together to give a room its distinct personality.I was photographing this book stack to list in my shop.  Looking at a room as a whole, this book stack isn’t likely to jump out and grab your attention, but book covers and spines that show this kind of aging are what draw me {Read More}

DIY Engineering Print French Letter Gift Wrap

I am really getting some “mileage” out of the 1872 French letter I purchased a few months ago, and came up with another way to use it.  I love the wrapping paper with antique images sold by Jeanne d’ Arc Living, but at about $14 for a 60-inch sheet (plus shipping), I knew I could get a similar look by creating my own for a lot less money.  I went to Staples and had them print an engineering print for {Read More}

On the Workbench – Tiered Stands and Wall Bins

A few months ago, I bought 6 of these little galvanized pots at a thrift store.  They were packaged with flower seeds and peat pellets, so you could grow flowers in them, but since the gardening season is past, they were discounted.  I added them to some scrap wood as small wall bins. I was fortunate to get a pretty large stock of old enamelware bowls and some baking tins recently, so my husband and I have been busy putting {Read More}

Creepy Halloween Skeleton Graphics Revisited

Since Halloween will soon be here, I thought I’d revisit some graphics I shared in early 2012.  They all come from an 1893 Gray’s Anatomy book I found in a thrift store.  I don’t do a lot of Halloween decorating, because we live in the country and get very few trick or treaters, and we aren’t home anyway, but I think these images could be used for some fun, but kinda creepy projects. Let me know if you create something {Read More}

White Painted Books {Prettying Up Ugly Old Books}

I love antique books, but not all antique books are equal. Generally, I look for books that have unique covers and illustrations or pretty text.  I also look for books with pages that show their age – especially those whose edges have started to slightly “brown”.  Some books have totally browned pages, and those are pretty, but generally are extremely brittle and fragile.  Unfortunately, some really old books have none of those redeeming qualities and the content isn’t really something {Read More}

Antique Doors – Entrance to the Past

There’s a very old building in a very tiny town, just a few miles down the road from my house. I rarely have my camera with me when I drive through the town, but I did a few weeks ago, and couldn’t resist pulling over to snap a few photos of the beautiful, aged old door. I can’t tell whether the building was a home or a business building, but these doors (and the rest of the wood left on {Read More}

Guest House Renovation…{My Dream Room}

We’re in the middle of several projects right now, including fixing up our 1980’s RV, which probably won’t get done until next year.  Most days, it’s too hot for my husband to work inside it, so I came up with a new project for him – wasn’t that sweet of me?  Fortunately, he didn’t seem to mind my idea much, once I explained my “vision”. When we moved into our house about a year and a half ago, I was {Read More}

Free Fonts to use with your Silhouette Machine

I’ve been out in my workshop all afternoon, determined to get it to a point that I’m not completely grossed out to be working in it.  It is rustic, to say the least, but it’s all I have and I am thankful it gives me someplace to work on projects, other than my kitchen table. Since I don’t have a project to share with you today, instead I thought I’d share another tip for those of you with Silhouette machines. {Read More}
